Maybe consider offsetting the tire/wheel mount? Here' a rough sketch of what I'm talking about.

Ah yes, higher, always an option. Positioning is always negotiable. Yours swings down! That's new! actually, is yours completely replacing the tailgate?

Yeah...functionally the swing down would need to be proven out. I was taking into consideration your idea of a bed extender. Also, the tailgate is removed in this iteration...lol.

Ah yes I was thinking more along the lines of:
    swing out concept tailgate down.jpg
Potentially utilizing the latching mechanism or incorporating a tailgate protective cap that latches to the gates.

Edit: sorry for bad scale. Also this is just one gate for visual purposes.
Edit 2: Could even go as far as making an accessorie peice to put to close it out that could also be used as a cargo seperator in the rails.

Edit 3: This would turn my trail limo into a stretch limo.

All interesting ideas. Have to prove a way to lock the "swing in postion" while the tailgate would be open.
Sorry, ive been fighting a truck all evening. Step 1 to installing a hidden light bar....dont have a
Plate bumper that you dont really wanna take off.

I need to do some measuring, and some staring at the rear of my truck. You made me think of some potential issues. All things for tomorrow morning!

Was thinking about it some more, but these would lock the gates closed by sliding into corresponding holes on the bumper.

as for the latching mechanism to the tailgate...might have to scrap that idea, as the gates would extend past the end of the tailgate almost 9" Unless the gates were shorter but then their use would be hindered and it wouldn't look quite as good.

Calculated the cost of tube steel for just the gates. $70 for 336" of square tube steel at metal by the foot. Thats 1.25"x1.25" 11Ga. Going from there, I think I could make the bumper for around $2-300 with tire gate. Depending on sheet(plate?) metal costs. My friend with the water jet said he'd charge 100/hr to run it and said I could use his brake press too. Wonder if he's got a metal chop saw and a welder too. I need to find the dimensions for the frame mounting points of the rear bumper as well as measure out all the angles and linear dimensions involved in following the lines of the rear. No ebay bumper gaps for me.

Edit: If and when i get a prototype made, then I'll look into the whole bed extension idea.

edit 2: Anyone know where I can get a free 3D model of a tacoma? Or atleast the bed? If I had one, I'd 3D print everyone mini tacos. @Sociopenguin I'm sure your son would love one.

Do you guys have a tentative area this is going to be? It's about an hour drive to KC for me. I will check my work schedule tomorrow for sure. Pretty busy with work, but you never know.

Ive heard Longview lake so far, but nothing has been really discussed yet.

    I'd assume here

Looks too much like BodyArmor's atm. Will be making it match the bed sides better and will be shortening it for more clearance. Shaving edges here and there to reduce weight.

Hey guys, so we are gaining some interest in the next Taco meet. Right now I was looking at Longview Lake Shelter 1, its got room for atleast 40 in spaces and we could grill either by the trucks or by the shelter. Up to you all. If we ever outgrew the spot(which I don't think we will fill even half) we could move over to the tailgate area, not nearly as nice though. If that's the area you guys want to use, I could call the Corps of Eng who are over the site. I made an event for it in the KC Toyota club and in a matter of an hour 4 people have said they are going with 4 more saying maybe. We might end up with at least 10 Trucks this time.

Sorry for so many posts! :threadjacked:

Edit: Just sent a message to the Kansas City Corps of Engineering as a feeler. Will let you know what they say.

If we get enough traction, I was thinking we could make it 10AM-2PM. That should be plenty of time for everyone to show up, chat, cook and move on out. I'd probably tell the Corps 10-3 just so we have time to clear out. I can bring some trash bags. I told everyone its BYOF, so we aren't providing food.

Maybe if these meets take off we could make stickers or shirts to hand out/sell to raise funds for bigger events.
I think if this one works out well we should plan a KSRocks meet in the future.

Another thing is people who want to promote their businesses could hand out business cards or show off their work, truck related or not. Eventually work to the point of sponsorships? Am I being too ambitious?
