There isn't any industry, recreation, or infrastucture to support growing the town in the direction they are planning. The goal is to grow the enrollment at S&T but there is not a lot to support that sort of poplation influx.

Remember when Liberty did the eminent domain trick and and bulldozed houses, a little church, and some other stuff to build a Red Robin and a Lowes?

It sort of feels like that down here right now.

 

Yup, opinions abound about that. I think the last major industry down there was the Briggs plant, but that closed in 2007.

The school itself is moving in that self-feeding, administration-intensive direction most universities seem to be anymore. Increase enrollment and tuition, push professors to focus more on research grants than the quality of the education, and bombard alumni with constant emails and flyers and why it is imperative they continue to donate. (Look, we demolished a historic theater to build a neat alumni house with its own bar! How cool! Money, please?)

Rolla feels weird now and I don't really visit anymore. Pretty much only go maybe twice a year for work-related stuff held at the school, and occasionally give a guest lecture, and then immediately head back. Most of the people I know from there have either moved out, retired and left, or died.

As for my old house, my landlord tore it down. He knocked down old two three-bed houses and built a pair of three-story, three-unit, 7-bed apartments. Went from $600/mo for each house in 2010 to $1700/mo per unit in 2020 when my coworker was living at the same address. Dale Wands is no idiot...

 

We should give up on battery electric and do diesel electric. Then we can have power… AND range

And speaking of the Liberty Triangle, I was just thinking yesterday of how I missed the trees in the middle of town. I'm ready to leave this area...

I'd drive one. Take it to a diesel place down here to void all the warranties and make it fun, plus the benefit of power and control from the electric drive.

 

He has to own at least a third of the rentals in town, if not more...

 

Yeah, he's a local "celebrity"
