Absolutely spot on. Had I pursued a more hard/theoretical engineering path, it would have been more valuable. Not that I regret going to school, but six years of it primarily taught me how to approach a problem and that I loath liberal arts departments.

Though I did get my dog and YJ while at school, so it's not all bad.

I have mixed feelings on networking. Sometimes it’s good, sometimes it’s people who are worthless hiring their buddies who are also worthless.

To be fair, 2 of my 3 real jobs were snagged through a friend... one of them when he literally pulled my resume out of the trash.

At least I enjoy it now. Last job was less hours but 3x the misery.

Networking is how I found my current job, though I also stumbled into a ridiculously small industry

I was tired of school after HS but went to college and was done in 4 years, which is shockingly uncommon anymore. 4 year degrees tend to take 5-6 for a lot of people

there’s also a lot of people that goto school not knowing what they want to do and waste 2 years trying to figure it out and then either drop out or have to go 4 more years because the first 2 were a waste and don’t count towards anything.

Took me longer than 4 years due to an inept advisor. Figured out the course map for myself after that. Then I stuck around for a masters for who knows why.

But yeah, this is also a huge part of the problem. College isn't for everyone, especially if you have no idea what you want to do.

I’ve gotten jobs both ways. Personally, the ones I’ve gotten not through networking have been the better positions.

A lot of it is knowing how to create a resume and job through the HR hoops. Also LinkedIn has become the place to go for jobs.

Similar here. We figured out I had ADHD about 2 years in. Getting that sorted out was amazing. Then I graduated into a recession, sooo off to grad school.

Funny enough, the first thing I did on my first day of work was submit my resume and application...

    So. Many. Stickers.
A: got my job that way in a roundabout fashion.

B: I work government so basically after your first two or three steps, any forward or upward movement is all about networking and knee pads.

My buddy got a masters and thought I should too. I didn’t do it and figured 2 more years of work experience would likely offset the earnings, plus the money I’d save. Now I’m earning about 30-50% more than him..

another thing too, if you want to make money, you have to switch companies every 3-5 years. There are very few places that will keep pace with what you’ll make changing jobs. Every switch I’ve made has been +20% or more. Currently getting close to 3x what I started at outta college (10 years ago)

Yeah. I graduated in 2010. Stellar time to look for a job.

I actually took another internship after graduation I could work until I found full time.

Generally yes, though I've been fortunate sticking with the same company for almost a decade. But again, weird/small industry, small company, niche job. We're one of the larger companies in the US for what we do, and there are fewer than 400 employees nationwide

Yep definitely doesn’t apply to every place. Even if someone is happy in their position, I keep tabs on the market for openings should one arise and to see what salary ranges are and where you should be for your experience and skill set.

For years people would start at one company and work there for 30-40 years, then retire. That’s no longer the world we live in for the most part but there are a few outliers of companies that have realized the value in retaining talent and taking care of employees

My boss was interested in my associates in business management and marketing

*Makes $10 an hour polishing dice. On contract.*

My associates could probably get my foot in the door marketing for a small company or working for a marketing team, but other than that, not much more.

If I could work a conventional job, I'd probably go to trade school. Looked into going to be a radiologic technologist and started job shadowing but didn't go.

The only reason I have my current degree was because it was free, and I wanted something to do while I was getting "better."

Interesting discussion about careers. I've been thinking a lot lately about signing up for a trade school myself. Was thinking welders or HVAC. Got my current job because my friend worked here and referred me, will be 8 years in September. Cushy job, but horrible management and pay. :boom:
