I finally bit the bullet and purchased a Katzkin kit for my Tacoma. I went with a Deluxe full faced leather kit and went with the Tuscany Amaretto leather. I also ordered 2 yards of matching vinyl to be able to wrap the Door and Dash Insert. My goal was to match what Toyota had done in the Limited.

The original vinyl had a minuscule layer of foam under it which masks the imperfections of the plastic that it covers. I started with the drivers rear door insert. I initially tried laying vinyl over the part without foam, the two ridges that are in the plastic came through and I didn't like that. I found some 1/4" upholstery foam from a local shop and put a layer of it down before wrapping it in vinyl. In retrospect I think a thiner layer fo foam would have been better and even a foam with tighter cells would also have been better. This foam seems to keep it's imperfections after pressing on it. Eventually it will 'release' and return to it's normal state.
You'll notice this in the video of the dash insert. I will say that it did perfectly fine a few days after being in a hot environment.
It ended up redoing the door insert several times and the end result was still not perfect. I will likely redo it at some point but it took me 4 tries to do it and the prep work in between is a killer.

I used contact adhesive in a conventional air paint gun to adhere the foam to the insert and the vinyl to the foamed insert. I found that the first layer of adhesive gets soaked into the foam, so I sprayed it twice. After the first application I let it sit for 15 min and them sprayed it again along with putting my first coat on the back side of the vinyl.
Usually I would use a heat gun to warm the vinyl to encourage it to bend around the tight corners but the part is so small and flexible that I didn't use that technique. Instead I used super glue to hold it in place as seen in the videos.

I apologize for not having a totally complete video of the front passenger seat Katzkin install. My GoPro Battery died.
There is no dialogue as it didn't come through very clearly.
Enjoy and ask any questions you have.

Could you have just put the new vinyl on top of the original rubber material?

Good question, and it was an original option but I felt the adhesive would not have a made a lasting bond.
