    Nice set up NYTaco.

The set up will depend on the type of kayak you're hauling and if you trailer or not. In my case I have long sea kayaks. When using my bed rack on my old truck I didn't like having 6 feet of boat sticking out the back and worrying about cars flying up behind me at intersections. This time I center mounted over cab with Hullavators to avoid that. The toughest part of any mount/rack system is tying your straps once you get the boat mounted. I used to use Seawings on my bed rack and also tried j racks. The seawings were convenient since you just stick the bow in and then slide the boat up there. Being able to stand in the bed made it easy to tie them down. If you don't care about sticking out the back a bit what about just bolting a set of sea wings or exo-aeros to a piece of 2x4 aluminum tube and bolting it straight onto the roof of the canopy? Having seawings flush with the rear would make shooting it up there easy. It would just depend on the type of kayak as to whether your hull is a good fit for cradles or not.

    Forget racks.

For the cost of the yakama racks you can have the whole trailer.IMG_20170507_152319.jpg

Beautiful , thanks for the link I'll get these tomorrow. I didn't realize they bolt in, I've seen similar straps with a little stopper at the end so when you close the hatch (designed for hatchbacks, I think my Rack kit even came with them) they stay in place and thought that's what you used but this is way better.

I am going to get a 54 Inch Yakima track system and towers and cross bars for hauling around the 12 foot Paddle Board on my ARE canopy. I see in most of the documentation it shows the paddleboard being on roof racks and has the tail tied down to a point in the front of the vehicle.

    Capture.jpg
I get that for a car that has the cross bars on the roof and are maybe not spaced very far and the nose will sit close to the front of a car but do you see a benefit to running that tie down from the tail of the board all the way over the cab of the truck to a tie down point by the bumper. I was actually thinking that could cause some stress to the board as the frame is long on the trucks and there is some twisting between the front and the box or canopy where it is mounted. Any one have any pics of a paddleboard mounted on the canopy and have you done the nose or tail tie down also. I will get the Yakima SUPDawg or SUPPup to go on the cross bars to hold the actual SUP but just wondering about the tail tie down.

It's my understanding that the main purpose of tying down the bows and sterns of the kayaks, paddle boards, canoes, etc is only in case of catastrophic roof rack or strap failure. Basically it's so all that stuff doesn't go flying off behind you and kill someone.

I've only ever used a Stern tie strap when hauling my kayaks long distances. That way if both hull straps failed I would just drag the boat behind me. I usually just use the two hull straps though.

I've got the Yakima J racks mounted to my Prinsu Design cab rack and everything worked great on my road trip. Went from Arkansas to North Carolina and the bow and stern straps do a good job steadying the kayak

I always use bow and stern lines when hauling our kayaks.

What are your front straps mounted to? I'd much rather do that than run to the bumper again

old thread but i plan on getting 2 kayaks for me and my girl. instead of buying a kayak mount or something, i plan on just using the stock rack and my tepui RTT.

    IMG_3551.jpg

as you can see, the top of the tent, and the rack sit pretty much at the same level. im planning on having the kayaks laying flat from the stock roof rack to the tent. and securing the kayaks to the roof rack and bed rack. what are you thoughts? seem like a sturdy enough idea? pros/cons?

    .
How much are those racks and did you install yourself? Is it difficult to do? Finally, my last concern is are they heavy? Those and a ~150lb cap might take up alot of your payload capacity no?

Looks amazing though! I have a similar looking setup minus the rack ofcourse.
