As @mauidogg said, simply because of weight. A steel tailgate cap makes the 3rd gen tailgate unbelievably heavy, simply because the cap is so large compared to 2nd gen.

Out of curiosity how much water typically gets into your bed? I've been noticing quite a bit more than I was expecting getting in, enough that I can see trickles of water coming in from under the rails.

@KB Voodoo any idea of when you'll have pricing for the combo or individually?

We will have pricing early next week. I suspect it will be similar to our 2nd gen caps.

They look great but why them over the factory plastic? I especially wonder for folks with bed racks. I could understand if there were additional tie down points and such.

If there was no bed rack and someone was routinely hauling pipe or something, protection like this would be great.

    What is the market?

Tacoma owners will buy just about anything that makes their little taco look beefier. Sort of like Taco Bell, add cheese and beans and shit. Same with us, except our stuff is either laser cut metal or LEDs.

No, this will add significant structural rigidity improvements to the bed as well and better protection when loading bulky materials.

They just look nicer, and they're steel. The factory plastic caps are really flimsy and a little bit embarrassing.

These also will seal a tonneau cover or shell better, because of the texture of the factory caps.

And obviously steel caps are better for bed racks.

Well, the tailgate cap prevents me from gouging out the plastic every time I load boards or anything longer than 6'. The second you put something on that plastic, it's scratched.

    How?

In your pictures, you are using factory tracks and clamps. Do you have other pics and examples?

I really have no idea how much water gets in. Just more than I would like. I know there are the two small opening near the header rail, but I see more drip lines coming down the sides. I traced it to those little pockets where the rubber strip isn't flat with the stock bed caps. The small area where it transitions from smooth to the raised textured sections. I also have a tailgate seal and added a couple other parts. I think if I get the side rails to be tight that would take care of 99.9% of the water problem

I don't have a tailgate seal but, I agree about the leaking from the sides. I've opened the cover and watched water trickle in from those spots. I was talking with Bak about that issue and the fact that the front of the cover is curled upwards. I think it's caused by the 3/4" seal being a little too tall or that it hasn't flattened enough yet. They also sent me a shim kit to help with flattening the side rails to help prevent water from getting in so I can update later on that install.

@1BDTACO, @KB Voodoo is correct but, if you said "All in favor?" Then Robert's Rules of Order dictates that it goes to a vote from there....

My OEM bed caps scuff and scratch if I look at them sideways.

Now my only issue is the tailgate cap. It stopping short of OEM and leaving that crease in the top of the sheet metal is just enough to make my OCD go nuts.

Will these be available uncoated by chance if someone perhaps wanted to have them linered?
