so far, with the majority of people here, they love their products and the service they've experienced.and my interactions with KB VooDoo have been good thus far. with that being said, I just placed an order for their crossbars!

Supplier management is a big issue, even with large manufacturing companies. Contacts need to be written to protect the prime contractor in these situations. Unfortunately, this usually requires specialized supplier management and contracts personnel as well as people to perform routine audits and inspections at the supplier. These all cost money and add to the final product price. It's hard for a small business to do all this and still stay competitive.

Ever thought about adding linex or other coatings as an option? Maybe as an upgrade at an increased user cost? Maybe pre-treating the steel in other ways before coatings are applied?

You aren't alone dealing with environmental impacts on parts. I work for manufacturing company and we have a customer using a modified (by us) version of our product outside of it's original operating environment. Even with thorough testing (salt fog, use cycles, temp cycles) and improved primers, coatings, and corrosion inhibiting compounds applied we still have issues meeting the designed service life in some areas and have had to decrease inspection and maintenance intervals.

This is what I was referring to. The coat was literally sprayed so thin it rusted clear through the coat. I have personally done powder coating for 8 years. This was due to insufficient coat thickness when sprayed. And it was well before the 'bad batch'

Powder coating can definitely have the potential to be extremely durable. Take brake calipers for example, find me a pair of brembo brakes that have the powder coating coming off in 4 months of minor exposure. Again, if done CORRECTLY it has the potential to stand up. But even so, have a look at these pictures, this was 4 months with no more than a weeks full exposure to sunlight and an occasional rain, the rest was storage in a shed. Coming from someone who has personally done powder coating, this is absolutely unacceptable.
Offering a Non coated version would be a simple alternative option that I am surprised they do not do, however, if they are going to offer coated final parts, they need to be able to stand behind it. Only helping some of the people who complain the most and ignoring others is just messed up.

Again, I brought it up early on before the process and was ignored by KBvoodo. Its easy for the guys on here to defend them if they weren't the ones who got ignored or sold a bad product.
Squeaky wheel gets the grease..... sounds like only the customers who are adamantly demanding they fix it are the ones who got help.

What they SHOULD do, is refund everyone with coating problems the cost of the coating....

Not a customer... but I've heard nothing in here about primer. My powder coater uses a marine grade primer on my projects first, then a good quality powder (I think they use prismatic).

Have had lots of stuff coated over the years and the quality issues here look like thin coats, no primers, and bad prep. And Voodoo should be suing the coater for poor quality and to support the people that have bad parts. Them not owning up is ridiculous.

I contacted sales@kbvoodoo.com for a fix on my peeling edges on my four month old rack. Guess it's up to me to sand and repaint my edges for a ghetto fix recommended by them, kinda wish I would have spent my money elsewhere.

Chad ended up getting back to me fairly quickly and is sending me replacement bars with the updated coating process. KbVoodoo stands behind their product.

    Workin' on it....
I had my sliders and rear bumper powder coated by a company in Washington state. Same thing - marine grade primer used on boats in saltwater followed by a quality powder coat. They still look brand new.

    Wow.
There should be a lawsuit between voodoo and their powder coater.

Not only is this affecting their product, but it's tarnished their brand name. Obviously, Chad has tried to do his best, but has also gotten tired of some who have been harrassing him (rightly or wrongly so).

It appears Chad is trying to do the best he can to defend his product, which he is very proud of (and for good reason on the design), but the powdercoating process was done so poorly that it has completely compromised his product.

One thing for sure, this is a lessons-learned that Voodoo will benefit from for years to come once the lesson is fully learned.
Issue is navigating through this when the wrong coating essentially made their product junk (or close to it, or at least not the quality that was intended).

Agreed, but I think VooDoo has also known about the issue and hasn't told new customers or at least made a notice about it. Instead, he promotes his product as having thousands of happy customers with a new and improved PC.

    Straight from the website:
NOW SUPPLIED WITH SMOOTH FINISH POWDER COAT FOR BETTER DURABILITY AND EASIER CLEANING.

So yes, this wasn't Chad's fault but I think they failed to get ahead of the curve when all the issues kept coming in and they continued to sell, sell, sell.

The smooth powder coat has nothing to do with any of this. Textured powder coat isn't any more durable than smooth finish.

We have worked through the problem. Our powder coat will be better than it ever has been. This is but a mere bump in the road.
