Tyler stopped by for his KDMax Pro Tune today in his 2021 TRD Sport. He immediately noticed the throttle and shifting improvement on the test drive. Tyler said he did a lot of research and was extremely happy with his choice. IMG_2006.jpg

    Information overload lol

Any folk over 35 here that use the vehicle for work and occasional road trips?

Y’all recommend the Lite or Normal tune?

**Is Waco Tx and SA the closest tuners near Houston?

    thanks in advance.

Yes Kaleb @KalebG98 covers Houston. You can test drive both settings if you like when you meet up with your tuner. Your tuner can help inform you on what throttle setting may work best for your trucks setup and your driving style.

I just loaded up with oak firewood and drove 70 miles home. The truck performed great.

For those looking for a fuel efficiency data points, here's my experience. Unfortunately I saw a drop with the KDMAX tune.

The truck: 2019 TRD OR V6 double cab automatic long bed, 2" lift, 32" tires, a steel front bumper and winch (which deleted a plastic skirt that helps with aerodynamics), and a GFC camper.

The long bed, double cab, 4x4 v6 means I've got about the worst mileage of any taco configuration. Plus the lift, mildly oversized tires, weight and loss of aerodynamics of the bumper and GFC, really make me take a hit. So, with that in mind, the numbers:

The numbers: On a weeklong trip driving from San Francisco to San Diego and LA and back with some trails and camping in between and NO TUNE, I get an average of 17.5 mpg. Some flat stretches of road cruising at 60mph I can hit 20.5 mpg but the average... especially with pushing the brick 70-75mpg, brings it down to 17.5. (This includes a 3% adjustment for my larger tire size.)

That same travel WITH (normal) TUNE I get 14.6 mpg.

General experience: Those were two metrics I decided to compare for hard data, but I also ran KDMAX for about a year and generally/anecdotally have found the fuel efficiency to be worse. With tune I'm usually around 150 miles at the half tank mark (as low as 135 miles, as high as 170 miles) . Without tune I'm generally 185 miles (as low as 160, as high as 210)

No surprise I guess. There's no such thing a a free lunch. More performance *should* cost more in fuel. But seeing so many reviews from folks claiming 1-2mpg gains I had to try it. I reasoned that maybe the tune was just choosing better shift points and somehow it was producing a more efficient drive to generate more fuel efficiency. But alas, that wasn't my experience.

Edit: As far as driving habits go, other than a sometimes less than ideal freeway top speed I pretty much drive like a grandmother. Slow acceleration. I won't jam up a hill. I know the truck burns a lot of gas to I try to drive in a way that minimizes that.

I went back to when I started tracking mileage on “Fuelly” January of 2022 right after getting tuned by Kreg in LA. I bought the truck in December of 2021 and up to that point I averaged 18.5 MPG’s (tank average). I was tuned with KDMAX Pro first and noticed a slight decrease in MPG’s. I had Kreg re-flash to the older KDMAX 7 which I really liked on my older 2018.

After the re-flash I started paying attention to MPG’s using the fuel app. My truck has grown in mods since first tuned whereas I was stock to now sitting on full suspension lift, 33’s, winch bumper with winch and steel sliders and Cat shields.

The lift and tires were in stages. Stock records would be January to October 2022, Lifted and stock tires October 4 - November 21, 2022 and Lifted and 33’s November 22 - Present.

I became a tuner in April for KDMAX and the tunes have changed as I’ve grown. Currently on KDMAX Pro 9.0, with slight variations in shift points and throttle setting. But all said my experience has been better mileage with tunes. I also drive to achieve best MPG’s.

One more edit. I do calculate MPG’s with correction for tire size so the MPG’s shown on Fuelly are for 33’s.

    Jason,

From Petal, MS had the similar complaint of most disgruntled Tacoma owners. Crazy shifting, sluggish acceleration and overall poor driving manners. Add to that he’s on 35’s, a lift and no gear changes. Can you say “Help!” KDMAX to the rescue!

If you’re in the MS, Central AL, and Gulf Coast Region give me a call. Or as Bart Morris would say “One call that’s all”.

I would pay attention to 6th gear. If you drive high speeds and hills, 6th is not ideal. It keeps the engine load over 80 % and cause a crappy fuel economy. 5th gear does much better.
Depends on the tip version ot the tune, downshift to 5th can be long and keeps you in 6th for longer time.
Attached is the example of being in 6th with a high load. Not KDMAX tune

I used to run Motul back in the day in my race cars. I run Amsoil now because it’s 100% synthetic but now I see that Motul advertises 300V as 100% synthetic also. I’d be curious to see a comparison. Maybe I’ll try Motul again and send off some samples to the lab. I noticed a significant reduction in engine noise and vibration when I switched from Mobile 1 to Amsoil so probably similar with Motul. Both are good though and the difference using a true quality oil is night and day. Keep us posted.

    Sweet! Keep us posted!

I'm noticing the same compared to Toyota Care synthetic oil (or whatever they put in there). A significant reduction in engine noise and vibration, especially at high RPM shift points.
