Ive had the kdmax tune for about 300kms now and I like it more each day. Throttle response, low end torque, shift points are all MUCH improved over stock and I'm getting 2-3mpg more on highway. If you're on the fence, get this tune now.

Ok so I have been driving with the tune now for a little over 1000 miles in Colorado and my impressions are that it's better than stock but didn't completely WOW me as I had hoped. I was really looking for low-end power which has bumped a bit but not to the point where I'm super impressed. My mpg's are about the same as before hovering around 18 for mixed driving.

BTW I opted for the 87 octane SLT and have a 2018 DCLB OR on 265/75R16 with a 2" lift + skids & sliders.

Also if you're in the Colorado Front Range area, MGMsangTaco is the guy to see! Super friendly and fast.

    Candor is appreciated!
With the lift, skids, and sliders, perhaps the LT would sit better on your truck over the long run.
I always recommend SLT only for pretty much bone stock and stock weight.
Any additional weight over 150ish lbs, and the LT is the tune of choice, even with stock size tires. My opinion!
Tunes will settle. Every tune on every vehicle settles, or rather the maps learn.
The SLT tune settled a little too much for my truck which is very similar to yours.
The LT seemed a little too responsive at first, totally manageable, but more than I thought to be ideal - but after 1000 miles it had “settled” into a the perfect spot.
See about getting with @MGMSangTaco and trying out the LT.
***As installers we all have our own retuning policies so I cannot speak for him!

Thanks for the kind words man! If you want to try another setting like LT or L let me know. I know you wheel and were hesitant to go over SLT but some guys that wheel pretty hard still love the LT particularly. I know you want that turbo diesel hilux at the end of the day though haha.

Thanks for chiming in brotha! I do free retunes (as many as anyone needs) to ensure we get their trucks driving as they should. Always want to make people happy at the end of the day and willing to go the extra mile retuning however many times necessary. I have retuned someone else from a while back about 8 times now just cause he wanted to try pretty much every setting and every octane haha. Needless to say we’re good friends now!

@MGMSangTaco , I had to pester Kreg a number of times to adjust shift points, adjust throttle in middle gears and go from reg to LT to wife tip to SLT, reg tune on 91. It’s been perfect and getting better for two months now. Ya gotta keep at it till you’re happy and you fellas have great customer relations. What’s not to like?

I agree with these guys that a retune will help you out. I use the regular tip in b/c of heavy 33s. In Denver it's perfect. When I drove down to Tennessee it was a little much for everyday driving. The altitude definitely makes a difference. I also tried using 91 gas on the regular octane tune to "maximize" the octane learning...could be placebo, but I really think it helps on mountain grades or towing. The rev pickup without having to change gears feels more responsive.

Kreg has been outstanding in customer service for me, I have asked a lot of him and he has exceeded any expectations I had. Very hard to find customer service in any business now days but I have to say KDMAX guys have it for sure. Also Cole @cemented has been outstanding as well about reflashing for whatever changes I wanted. If not for the KDMAX and great service I would probably be driving an ugly Ranger.

Hell yeah man. It all starts at the top. We’re able to provide people with awesome customer service as tuners cause Kreg and Dave are always on top of everything.

Haha glad you didn’t have to switch for a ranger… KDMax has saved a few people I know from trading the truck in for an ecoboost. And I know quite a few people that came from an ecoboost that love how the Tacoma drives with KDMax. That being said I still got absolutely smoked by an ecoboost recently

Are there any long term reliability issues with the tuned motors?

KDmax fixes most all of the problems associated with the crap factory tune, but a tune can’t make up for the fact these trucks just don’t produce much torque at low rpms.

I live in the flat lands and am frustrated with this, the mountains would expose this problem much more.

Perhaps the tune could be tweaked to help with this? IMO the tune should use 5th gear more, it still tries to get into 6th gear too early when under load and 6th is frustrating on about any incline below 1700-1800 rpm.

I am not a mechanic or an engineer, but I know a dude who is both who custom tunes diesel engines and he basically says,"these aren't race car tunes or race cars engines and we're not turning them into that. Modern engines in passenger cars and trucks are well equipped to handle more than the average factory programming and average person puts on them. Want longevity? Maintain your vehicle in all ways possible using quality materials." That's the gist of it anyway. This guy works and has worked pretty much solely on Toyota's for the last 20 years.

Because I've know this guy for 30 years, I will trust what he says until a literal Toyota engineer who worked directly on the D4-S 3.5L chimes in and says otherwise.

Personally, I am not concerned about the longevity of my truck on the KDMax tune in the slightest. If I get anything over 250k I'll be happy considering I have 60k on it now and bought it in January 2017.

I am extremely impressed, even just doing the reg octane LT it feels considerably quicker (almost like a different vehicle altogether), and while I just took it up and down the freeway after flashing it an hour ago, it seems as if the weird shifting is gone; this had bothered me since first buying the truck right before last Christmas. I'll be putting a bunch more miles on it tomorrow and look forward to further running it through it's paces, but feels like a winner at this point.

Also stoked with how simple the entire thing was to do it myself. Looking at all the instructions, from vF to the TSB update with Techstream, it only appears daunting at first. Once I finally crossed my fingers, hooked up the maintainer and adjusted my laptop's settings as directed, they (TSB/ tune flash) each completed much faster than I expected and with zero issues. Totally painless. Altogether it seems everything I learned and did throughout this process really illustrates the value of this forum and the work/ knowledge contributed by many of it's members. Well done.

How does KDmax effect the trucks capabilities in 4H/4L while off road? Less dirt road, more legitimate off roading... Does it effect things like throttle response, etc?

Obviously I'm 90% pavement so this seems like the right choice but I'm very curious how it effects the truck at those crawl speeds with higher rpm
