gears will not change your speedo, just your RPMs. I used a police speed gun to verify this. I’ve been running 4.88’s for 3yrs and with 32’s it’s about 380-400rpms higher than stock. Tire size will affect your speedo, but with 32’s vs stock I am only seeing a 3-4mph difference at 60mph, so not enough to worry about.

Interesting. I guess speed is no longer captured from the transmission like in years past. Used to change out the little plastic gear in the GM transmissions to correct for gears or tires.

That’s what I thought. IIRC the speedo sensor is down by the wheels now

Yep, I just looked that up. That explains why bigger tires effect speed but gears don't. It is measuring wheel speed. I learned something today. Looks like previous Toyotas did measure at the transmission.

Trying to judge the best throttle for me seems hard without testing each one but I’m trying to eliminate that as much as possible. And everyone has their own opinion or preferences.

in the spirit of helping me narrow it down, I want to try to compare. Does anyone here happen to drive a newer f150 18’ up? It’s my work truck and if I can judge your feel of the sport mode and your preference on Kd then compare to what I like. If that makes since (I know it’s apples and oranges) but I’m trying to compare driving styles

i don’t look at mpg when driving, I want to get up and go not slug along. When I cross a busy intersection I need to have faith and be one with the taco lol (had a few pucker moments that were unsuspecting). I’m leaning toward regular or lt but it’s hard to judge based on the reviews (see ppl complain it being too “touchy”.

If your looking for the response you described go with Reg tip. You will relearn pedal pressure really quick.

My wife has an Explorer and I like the way it gets up and goes. My truck is about the same on the Regular/Aggressive throttle.
That is what you should try, then go down if it is too much.

The way I see ppl talk about reg. Is like a needle drop on the pedal will send that mf shooting for the moon. Hoping it’s just an exaggeration and their preferred style.

I see the pricing is up to the individual tuner but what are the standard rates (I get location plays it’s part)? Is there a cap on it or can they essentially try and take advantage? What’s the standard time tuners are allowing a retune (whether to change the throttle or change for agm battery etc)? Are there any planned new versions coming out or in the works (this would likely be a one and done for me, not interested in paying to tune each new version but don’t want to pay now and ish a new version rolls making one feel slightly jipped).

    Assuming tuners are vetted?

That is exaggerated! It is very responsive it will take just a short period of time to learn pedal pressure. Your tuner will allow you to try the different throttle settings before you leave. You will be able to dial in the throttle that works best for you. Yes the price does vary and location. But your looking at $350 to $400 for the tune and free ECU update if needed with tune purchase.

Appreciate both your feed back. Honestly I didn’t feel this way about the taco until recent. I’m always in s5 ect and it was all good with the occasional pucker and the slight hesitation but since I found out about the sport mode in the f150 it has made the taco feel less then adequate

To be fair I was exaggerating on the needle comparison but it seemed like “way to much” for some. I’ll start with the reg for sure though

The authorized KDMAX tuners are vetted and you will receive the best customer care and wont be taken advantage of! Most any change will be done no charge. You will have long term support.

Yes for some it can be. But most just need a day behind the wheel and love it!

And that was main reason of the question. I assumed technically capable yes but nowadays the taken advantage of part (across all lines of work) seems the norm.

Damn, you asked some good questions (thanks, Dave, for the answers).
We have a large group of guys with a lot of tuning experience that support each other. We start all new guys on a trial basis to vet them.
When we first made the tune, we only had one throttle choice. But everyone has different opinions about that, so we had to keep making more and more choices. To me Regular is “normal”.

We had a guy in Pensacola, but he did not update to the Pro software, so he can no longer buy credits to tune other trucks. Maybe we can reach out to him and see if he still has enough credits to tune your truck. Or you and I can meet halfway (I’m in Baton Rouge).

I will be in Natchez Mississippi this weekend (and every weekend during hunting season-October thru February) if anyone needs to get tuned in that area.
Only weekend that I won’t be there is October 23rd weekend when I’m going to Gulfport Mississippi on Saturday and Sunday for golf and Monday thru Thursday in Perdido Florida for golf.

PM me if you want to schedule a tune.

Took me a couple drives to get used to it. Very similar to the hemi ram 1500 i had as a rental a month back. When i got back in the taco after the ram... the throttle was so disappointing. kdmax makes it feel much more fun...
