Can’t speak to your situation, only can say that pinning drops the avg temp on mine about 10* when towing, more when not.

I was wondering about that. I saw 250 at the TC and 230 at the transmission on a long steep hill. I had to pass a military convoy so I had no choice. I might try that next season. Good idea.

towing in the western US can be demanding.

im not experienced in the tables. I was throwing it out there because others would know more than me. Your response sounds logical, but somewhat Greek to me. I’ve not had anyone be able to make it tc lock when climbing (ECT+S/ECT) after you start to heat up in 3rd…not sure if it’s even possible (or a good idea).

Also, is 230 degrees too hot? What is trans fluid temp rated to and for how long?

This may or may not answer your question. I suggest watching the whole thing but revisiting again around the 31:00 mark.

The research I did on the data sheet showing transmission temps and fluid life was based on being at that temperature for 1 hour straight. Not the occasional bump up then cool off. After my 250/230 = TQ/Pan I changed the fluid expecting black and burnt smelling. It was slightly dirty/darkish and had no burn smell to it. That was after 55k miles total. First change on the transmission. What I should have done was take a sample and send it out for testing.

Back in the beginning of the "tuning" we all used to set 3rd gear tc locking to high speeds(never lock) and move speed higher in 4th to delay tc locking. That partial locking is robbing a precious 200 rpms while accelerating and moving through gears.
I stopped experimenting with these tables and moved mine all to stock settings and adjusted slightly to mask 200 rpms drop in 3rd.
But there are 3 tables. Perhaps one of them can contol tc lock while in S. Not sure if ETC button has any other functions, except selecting a different set of the throttle limits and shift points

I tuned my 2020 with 04b82 and love it. It is working great! I did the aggressive tip in and I run premium gas. Definitely look up paparee for the hook up on a good tune!

Had the KDMAX regular gas SLT tune done last weekend. My impressions are:

    • The SLT gives the truck a more assertive and "truck like" roll off from a stop than before, without being "jumpy".
    • Smaller, typical highway, inclines are now achieved in 5th most of the time. The truck now accelerates up typical highway grades in 5th, you can get tip into the throttle about half to 2/3 before it shifts to 4th. Before any dip into the throttle in 5th would mean the transmission would dump to 4th almost immediately.
    • On steeper inclines, the truck now moves more assuredly, and doesn't have nearly as many of those moments where it can't decide what gear to be in. When it does, it seems it's my driving to blame.
    • In passing situations you now have to press the accelerator down more to get that shift to 4th, but no more than what I'd expect from a typical automatic
    • Given the above, the tune has fixed the cruise control (constant speed) issue with it dropping to fourth gear up normal freeway grades. In my opinion the constant speed cruise is now usable on the truck.
    • Truck still is "over-geared" in the sense that sixth gear is mainly usable for flat or very slight upgrades. The engine in the truck is just incapable of gaining speed up anything but a small incline in 6th, so there still is an expected shift from sixth to fifth (which I'm very used to by now having driven the truck "stock" for 8 months). Honestly, if I had a "wish" for the truck, it's that it would simply lock out the sixth gear altogether without resorting to sport mode "5" to do so (as that revs more before shifting which impacts the gas mileage). Something like a regular (non-sport mode) tune, with the option to have that second overdrive (6th) on flat freeways would be preferred to having it go to 6th on every downhill, then to 5th for every uphill.
In all, worth the money spent in terms of fixing the transmission performance to what it probably should have been from the factory.

Pinning the thermostat won't help if the tc clutch solenoid (SLU)is turned off for a given gear/accelerator position.
this is what was observed while towing in 3rd
For the fluid in TC to be sent to the cooler, you need SLU in On state.
On the cold engine, SLU stays off until tranny gets to temps.

I am in newfoundland canada and want to buy the software to start doing KDmax tunes on our tacos here because it seems impossible to find anyone on the east coast of canada doing it. How can i go about this, just buy the software and cable for 349?

ok that makes sense. However, I have the thermostat pinned and my temps sit at 185 vs the 195 they use to sit at for the transmission

I’m not disputing what you’re saying here (cause I have no clue) only reporting that my trans operating temps report lower with t-stat pinned than not.

I think the closest Cdn tuner to you is in Ontario. If you want to tune your own vehicle you could purchase the vftuner software and cable plus purchase the KDMax tune from @PapaRee .

If you’re looking to tune others’ Tacomas on the rock then it gets a bit more complicated (and expensive). You would need to purchase the pro tuner package and meet certain other requirements of a legit business to be able to offer that service.

Yes it doesnt seem to be an easy task, need a big market to justify it. I think theres lots of potential here though. Tacomas are easily the most popular truck here on the rock.

Had @NickJacq23 tune my 2020 DCLB this pst weekend.

After 4.88 gear swap and the KDMAX tune the truck drives and acts like what I had hoped. Highly recommend it. I opted for the 87 tune with light throttle and very satisfied. Nick was easy to deal with and worked around my schedule. Highly recommend Nick and the tune.

I don’t get the best MPG average around 15-16 mpg but the area of Ky I live in does not promote fuel economy. 15mile commute to work is curvy slightly hilly so it’s always off and on throttle and up and down grades. Truck was getting the same mileage before gears and tune so I figured any boost in mileage was just a plus.

Someone should set up at Tuning Shop across the street from a Toyota dealership and then offer test drives in a tuned Tacoma after buddy test drives the stock Taco from the dealership. Probably sell as many Tunes as the dealership sells trucks. :D
