Personally, I have tried about all of the popular tunes at this point, as well as stock. While there are moments of 20+ MPG, and moments of 16 MPG, realistically I average about 18.5mpg across all of them - so as long as that doesn't drop off and stays fairly consistent, I'm happy.

And FWIW, the KDMax Pro is hands down the best tune I have used, bar none. Smooth shifting, better power management, just feels like it should have all along.

Stock everything, flashed with Pro tune, today....new truck (2018 v6 AT) performance today. Took away all of the shifty shifting and seeking.

So my two cents on mileage and performance. No one seems to be considering altitude. You lose 3% for every 1,000 foot elevation gain. So the person above from SLC valley at approx 5,000 ft in altitude is at 16.5% decrease in power. That's why turbos rule at altitude.

    Tacoma stock at 268 HP

    HP Loss = (Elevation x 0.03 x HP @ sea level)

Elevation Constant HP at sea level HP Loss % loss
    100.00 0.03 268.00 0.88 0.3%
    1,000.00 0.03 268.00 8.84 3.3%
    2,000.00 0.03 268.00 17.69 6.6%

If you're stepping on it you're gonna lose MPGs.

i lost something like 1-2mpg. but my mileage has always sucked. and i'm in DFW along with endless Tacomas @TacoManOne which is another reason folks haven't been considering altitude as a primary factor. on Coyoza or previous KD or OV tunes i was maybe around 17avg and now i'm probably about 15. been driving it fairly gently as well.

I wonder if “winter gas” is a thing in the south. I am in Louisiana and I find my mileage is worse in the winter, but I thought that winter gas was only for northern states. Anyone in the oil/gas business know?

i've heard opinions ranging from 'could be' to straight up dogmatic... but i've never heard anything i could regard as an actual answer. the change and the timing of it have always been suggestive. sometime just before Thanksgiving i drop 1-2 suddenly and around that time a ton of folks start asking these questions on forums. :notsure:

We switch over to oxygenated gas on Oct 1 in Spokane. And that’s when mileage drops

Winter blend fuels take a bite out of mpg's. Here in Socal winter blend fuels start Nov 1st i started to see mpgs drop on the first tank.

Not stepping on it. Cruising down I-90 at like 70ish, same as I do on the I-5 but that has mountain passes and many hills

Winter time = colder air = denser air charge = more fuel to keep proper air/fuel ratio. You will use less fuel at higher elevation versus sea level as well because of air density.
“Winter blends” would have more ethanol which shouldn’t matter because the Tacoma has no way of determining if it’s running an ethanol blend. To simplify it, all it cares about is hitting it’s AFR targets and adjusting ignition timing to make maximum power with the least amount of detention. The main variables are air density and fuel octane.

Mine is setup to shift to 5 at no less than 45mph (under light throttle) and it never even thinks about 6 until it’s over 60mph. Mileage does not appear to be made any worse by the higher rpm of city driving. Have about 500 miles on it since the flash. :)

Managed to get 15.5 MPG going from SLC to Boise today. That’s up 2-3 MPG from my normal trips. Not bad!
