    Not true.
We still have lots of people on our original KDMax 6.0 and they are happy. When we do have an update, it is optional. I think with all the improvements that we put into KDMax-Pro, there should not be any updates for a while.
So the answer to your question is --No, you will not need constant updates.

A really huge part of what makes me love this tune, is the people behind it. @TWTaco bailed me out of a unique wiring situation without even knowing each other and @PapaRee has always been solid. Going out his way to make sure I'm taken care of. Rad ass humans who stand behind their products and put their money there mouth is. That goes a long way.

Any of the 6MT guys mind reporting back long term on if the tune has been worth it? I get the autos with the shifting but I am on the fence with the manual.

I can't stress enough, if anyone is on the fence about tuning, just go for it. I originally got tuned with the 6.0 last year and noticed a dramatic difference in the way the truck drove. I recently re-geared up to 5.29s and while I have been enjoying the low-end torque and effortlessly driving around in 6th on the highway, I was noticing a dead pedal feeling around 5th gear that really required me to mash down to get more power and overall the truck just felt different.

I got a tune yesterday because I wanted to get the update for the re-gear but also wanted to try the new Pro sport version. Once again, it is like a totally new truck. Totally smoothed out the gear changes, no more dead pedal feeling. Feels like the power is just a linear ride from zero to highway speed.

While I'm really glad I re-geared, I still think the KDMax tunes made the biggest difference in drivability and enjoyment of the truck.

So, here's another initial testimonial from the peanut gallery...

After a year of researching, monitoring, and inquiring about tuning in general and the KDMAX tune in particular, I met up with Sean on Saturday in Manchester, NH and had the KDMAX Pro - Sport installed on my 2019 TRD Pro, which up 'til Saturday was all stock (except that I did have the dealer do the TSB-0092 flash update last year when I became aware that it was available). So, my initial impression of the tune's affect on my truck's overall "drivability" in one word? WOW!

From the moment I put it in D, took my foot off the brake and onto the gas, I was like WOW. Since Saturday I've driven about 250 miles with it under a wide range of normal travel conditions, everything from full highway speeds with no traffic to heavy commuter traffic merging from one highway to another at low speed with a lot of back and forth from gas to brake, and overall I have to say that I should have just got the tune done when I first started looking into it a year ago.

Driving along at full highway speeds with minimal traffic at 60-80 mph, gotta say I didn't notice any difference. But at low speeds / low RPMs, driving in heavy traffic & merging, or just driving around town - the overall responsiveness is SO much improved. I know it's been said in this forum before, but as someone who has worked for an automotive supplier for almost 20 years I'll say it again. The engineers at Toyota should be ashamed of themselves that they couldn't do with all of the resources at their disposal what the KDMAX team has done. Kudos, gents.

As for gas mileage impact, I told Sean that I am planning to track my mileage closely for a while continuing to run 87 (probably 1000 miles or so), and then I will change over to 93 and track that for a while (at least 1000 miles) in order to compare the two. I also have several thousand miles of mpg data for 87 pre-tune that I can use as a baseline. Afterwards (probably a few months from now), I will be happy to post results.

Nothing personal, but my take on this is Toyota and other manufacturers are being forced to comply to standards from outside sources for whatever reasons.

I believe the engineers would and have developed this engine to it's fullest potential and are probably pissed that they can't show it's potential to the world while people look on and call them failures. They're not stumblebums and I am sure have great pride in their work and abilities and would love to showcase their abilities and successes, but instead..... :annoyed: yes boss.....

I won't believe for a second that a couple of guys here and there working out of their garages on their computers are more capable than the engineers and money mentioned above who put it together from the ground up. But thank God for the little guys who unlocked the door !

Anyhoo..... Please don't forget us and be sure to POST your results !

Good luck out there, keep it under a hunnerd ! Hope to bump into you for coffee one day on Willow

Its not unheard of to under tune a engine so that higher tier models, or future versions can produce more power. Just look at tesla, many of their higher tier options are present on lower models, but they are software blocked out.

I think toyota should of had the trd pro tuned for a higher output, probably would of pushed sales a bit higher. Seems like that might of been the goal at the start, but in the end they tuned the engine for longer life over higher output.

EPA. Toyota tuned the engine to get the revs as low as possible a quickly as possible.

Tuned a brand new 2022 (ECU-04c21) today with the KDMax-Pro Sport throttle. He was coming from a full-size diesel truck.
Got a call from John on his drive home with "this is amazing, I love it!"
John already had a 3" lift and 33" tires.
He is a lurker on TacomaWorld-- so, nice to meet you John! Enjoy the tune!

I've had my truck tuned for a while now (6 speed manual). I started with the OV Tune 2.0 "base map" and even that was world's better than the OEM map from the factory. Ran that from Nov 2020 to Sep 2021 where I then wanted to try out the KD Max 7.0 tune. The KD Max 7.0 was a lot smoother than the OV Tune 2.0 and I was happy with what I got out of it. Then a couple months later they had released the KD Max Pro tune and although not as much of a jump in refinement as it was from stock to OV Tune or OV Tune to KD Max 7.0, I still definitely noticed drivability in the lower RPM range was improved and the fact that the KD Max Pro tune was full octane learning made it worth the small price to upgrade from KD Max 7.0 to the Pro tune. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask

Yes but you want to be sure it is a Tacktrix openport 2.0 cable. You will need to purchase the tuning software from vftuner.
There is always the risk of buying used.
