Great, I will try it in the near future. This thread actually convinced me to do in on my Tacoma.

Modifications are bad and only bad people modify.
You answered my question Billy. It's also a theft deterrent as a nice ancillary benefit.

I know it sounds silly, but better fuel economy as well as running the engine/drivetrain at less intensity to achieve/maintain the same speed is my goal. I'm often in remote areas like logging roads or BFE, and if I can get 10% better fuel economy in my truck and have all my things on me, that's an extra 30-40 miles a tank worth of insurance. I don't care about the cost as much as these benefits, so it's more of a practical thing, or so I tell myself...

I guess it's time to start chatting with some tuners in Appalachia and see what we can do this Spring...

Middle of January I got in contact with the guy in NJ who does PA. He said he would be in my area before the end of the month. I texted him a few times to confirm what day/time he would be available and got no response. Should I just get in touch with the guy in Columbus and take a little joy ride on a weekend coming up?

PapaRee isn't just trying to sell something here, and I'm not getting paid anything to say it, but he's exactly right. I'm just a happy customer. I've been driving sports cars on tracks around the country for damn near two decades now. I've done all manner of tuning to improve them from their stock form. The 3rd gen Tacoma is, by far, the worst factory ECU tune I've ever come across. It's atrocious and the difference when applying the KDMax tune is substantial.

    Normal works for me.

Have not had a lot of time to drive it but this tune seems like an improvement over stock for sure. I don’t feel as much for added power or torque as improved shifting logic. The truck holds gears longer rather than continuously trying to shift to a higher gear then drop back down a gear or two. Shift points seem more logical and the truck will hold 3rd and 4th gear when it should, ie driving in traffic at lower speeds. Factory tune would upshift to 5th or 6th automatically and immediately downshift again at the slightest throttle input. So far so good. Will report back when I get some miles on it and it settles in but so far another satisfied customer!

I came from a Subaru Crosstrek... You think the tacos are bad? Drive one of those. But those Subarus are WAY worse. Paired with a CVT transmission that is just terrible all around. They have an actual sport mode and even that is a total waste. Everything from acceleration to stopping feels so unnatural in those cars. Worse part is that it wasn't even something I noticed during a test drive. I figured it was just break in abnormalities and learning. Nope. 11k miles in and I was done. I even took it in and had them recreate the odd shifting and stopping and they said it was normal but offered to replace the valve body on the tranny? Wtf!?! I knew right then I wanted out.

I do agree though, the tacos are terrible but not the worst. At least there is tons of support here and so many options. Over in the CT forums, if you even mention something like servicing a dif, or flushing tranny fluid yourself, they get all hoped up and ask why you didn't just take it into the dealer

Got the kdmax tune last Friday from UScgamecock7. Very easy Install. Took like 10 min. Appreciate him driving to me (@90 miles). Have put maybe 100 miles so far. Much better shifting. Still not use to the throttle. Meaning, when you touch it, the truck goes! Lol. Got the normal setting. Will update after a few tanks or so. So far like it and you can tell it’s better just backing out the driveway!!

Possible for the truck but not driver ;). I know I couldn’t or wouldn’t want to go back and I’ve only been tuned a day. I didn’t have too many problems with the factory tune, just the shifting seemed illogical at times, but no desire to go back having tried it.

It’s really a shame there isn’t a way for people to try it risk free. I don’t think anyone would choose to not pay for the tune and go back to stock. Well done.

I'll give ya that - the Subaru CVT is abysmal. I believe it to be another one of those situations where appeasing the EPA informed engineering decisions.
