I would test drive Normal throttle. See how that works for you first. You can test drive all 3 to find what best works for you if needed.

Is aggressive throttle now called "Sport Throttle"?

Yes Sport throttle is our most aggressive throttle setting. Here is a description of throttle settings both Automatic and Manual.

    Auto Transmission
    1. Sport throttle- Aggressive, linear (much like our Regular/aggressive now but optimized for less jerky low speed)
    2. Normal throttle- Used for Daily Driving but aggressive and linear (much like the old SLT but optimized and linear)
    3. Lite throttle- Like the Stock/WifeTip throttle but optimized to be linear and smooth

    Manual Transmission
    1. Sport Throttle- most aggressive and responsive.
    2. Normal Throttle- more than stock but easier for Daily Driving.
    3. Lite Throttle- more than stock but 5% less than Normal.

FWIW... before making my 2019 Pro my DD, my DD was a 2006 BMW 3 series with 6 spd manual, so I know exactly the transition you are going through, and my daily commute puts me on RT 128 in the Boston area, so I know all about aggressive-based traffic congestion.

I got my truck tuned about 3 weeks ago. Sean set me up with the SPORT throttle and I've never looked back. You just have to remember that it's a truck, not a German sports sedan. But that said, since having the tune done on my truck it is night & day from a driveability / throttle response perspective with respect to maneuvering in heavy traffic and being comfortable that a lane change can be executed as intended. Whereas I used to have to switch into sport mode and manually down shift into 2nd gear to ensure low speed responsiveness while merging from one highway to another, now I can just leave it in D and do what I got to do.

The best way for me to explain it is that the throttle response is more congruent with throttle input. Where Tacos with factory tune may occasionally experience a dead peddle, then more input resulted in the truck dropping two gears and rocketing off like a jackass, the throttle rolls on as you press your foot into it without the crazy rocket off. My "powerband" is spread wider but you can still feel it start to come on at 3200 or so and the truck will pull up to redline. The sharp acceleration curve from 3800-4500 then fall-off is spread wider from the factory tune. Try it you will understand what we mean, and you will like it. Hard to describe in words other than "truck drive better, make truck good".

Another thing that was present that now seems eliminated is giving the truck throttle, letting off then giving a little throttle again. This used to confuse the shit out of my truck, sometimes it would just kind of rev before accelerating with factory tune. Now with the tune, if I let off and coast for a second then start giving it gas again because my lane cleared etc., the truck just starts going and doesn't get "confused" with what I want to do. Also have not had my dead peddle for a stopped left turn that I used to get occasionally.

I've been tuned less than a week, have no affiliation with any tuners, but can almost guarantee that anyone who try's this tune will not want to go back to factory. I have no frame of reference if this is the "best" but I doubt I'll ever feel the need for additional improvement barring any issues showing up.

Hi all, after reading and watching this thread from from the start I think I'm ready to get the KDMax Pro tune.
BUT I live 25 miles east of Morgantown, West Virginia.
I saw on page 1 GPatriot does WV, so i sent him a pm. But he is still about 5.5 hrs and 316 miles from me.
Pittsburgh, PA is about 75 miles from Morgantown, WV. I just wondered if there was anyone closer to me.
    Thanks!

-David @dave5623 Is about 220 miles from Morgantown. Shoot him a PM maybe you can discuss a meetup point to shorten the drive.
    - Cincinnati @GPatriot (John) May also be able to make a meetup location.

I would happily drive 5 hours to get this tune applied to my truck if that was my only option. That said, you can always go the DIY route and buy a tuner and tune pack and install it yourself (assuming you have a Windows laptop and a little bit of tech know-how). DIY gives you some flexibility to be able switch between tunes at your leisure plus you'll get a OBD2 adapter which can be used for other things. The entire process is well documented on here and as long as you read through everything, take your time, and follow all of the steps in the right order it's a pretty straight forward process. Disclaimer - I've worked in IT for 15+ years...this stuff comes easier to me than some folks...not sure I would recommend DIY to someone that isn't a little tech-savvy already.

I'm hoping it's not my only option, and yes I know it is not my only option. I've read up on just about everything I could once I got my Tacoma.
I'm sorry, but I don't make a whole lot and can't afford to buy a tuner and a tune pack. Heck with a wife and 2 boys (6 & 2) I'm just happy as hell to be able to drive a Tacoma. I love this f'ing truck.

Has anyone looked at the stock tune to figure out why the throttle response is so wonky? I am curious what Toyota’s rationale was there or is it all just about fuel economy.

Anyone with VFTUNER can look at the stock Toyota tune. It is a mystery why it is the way it is. EPA, CAFE regulations????

No logical explanation, all the other Toyotas-4Runners, Camry, Tundra, etc. are not tuned this way. Just the 3rd gen Tacomas.

Is there a thread or a reply somewhere that explains the process of doing the tune DIY?
I’m just generally curious how it’s done.
    Thanks!
