HUGE shout out to @TWTaco and @PapaRee for their unmatched customer service.

My OVT registry key I got from Matt a long time ago somehow changed and does not match the key when I open VF or p5 flash software. Kreg wanting to make sure I was satisfied had his guy Dave come down to San Diego to tune up my truck since I’m unable to do it. Awesome. Super excited to try the new KDMAX.

If anyone needs their truck tuned today in San Diego hit them up!

It would be good to have a section of the first post listing self install steps / requirements for people without the background to know.

    1. Purchase Taxtrx cable — link
    2. Flash to latest TSB if needed?
      1. Check and decide
      2. If needed, install tech stream (link to TS thread)
      3. Identify cuw
      4. Double click and follow prompts
    3. Purchase VF Tuner — link
    4. Activate ECU
    5. Purchase tune — DM to OP
    6. VF Tuner Software install steps
    7. Tune apply steps
    8. Revert to stock steps

I assume most is straightforward but not having done it yet it would be slick to have it spelled out in advance.

Maybe someone with more knowledge will explain how a tune works, but I just wanna to tell you it is very easy. All you need to do is purchase the cable, vf tuner, and a battery maintainer, and a laptop. Next is to downlod techstream and update tsb. The instructions is on another thread called “ECU TSB update” by tonered. Then you need to install vf tuner, instructions is on their website. Then pm paparee for the tune files. I read everything to get the general knowledge. Then I literally did it in my garage by myself in like an hour following all in instructions.

Thank you!! Exactly what I needed. I know what a tune is and how it works, just the tool list. What’s the battery maintainer needed for? Know how it works, but curious why it’s needed.
    Thanks again!

Basics of a tune - it is an adjustment to throttle, shift points, and other parameters set in your ECU. Does what a shift sense does and WAY more.

what do you need to tune?

DIY- ~ $500-$700 (depending on tune pack purchase)
    - a windows laptop
-the VF software and a tactrix cable (purchased from VFtune)
-4 VF credits to register your truck
-A tune pack or individual tune
-Basic computer confidence and know how
-The ability to follow exact direction this is not something you want to oops a step

to have someone else flash- ~$250-$325 (depending on what tune and who)
Just show up with your truck

Tip in is basically throttle sensitivity more or less

this is 100% reversible if you don’t like it ( in all my many trucks tuned I have NEVER had someone want to take it off ) I offer a money back guarantee if you really want to go back to stock. You can either have the person who flashes you remove it, go to any Toyota dealer and have them flash a TSB to remove it, or you can download the software to do it (for free thanks to @tonered follow all his threads especially the ECU update one it’s great stuff) you will need to purchase a tactrix cable to do that.

There is no negative impacts to the truck if anything it will help the truck live longer because it reduces overall RPMs and improves the way the truck operates.

    side effects include:
Driving more because you are not yelling at your truck all the time
Smiling because the throttle actually works now
Dollars in your pocket from slight MPG gains (disclaimer MPG gains can only come if you can resist driving fast with the new tune)

The battery maintenance is basically so that the battery doesn’t fall below 12volt, since the truck needs to be “On” without idling while the tune is being installed. I basically took out all the ground wires of my accessory lights, turn off the radio and the AC and then hook up the battery maintainer. You will see the instructions and warning along the way in the other post, as well as in the Vftuner instructions. Hope everything goes well for you man. Or you can have someone tune it for you too. Goodluck!

Because it will be a very sad day if your battery dies during an ecu flash

you need the battery to stay above 12v

How much improvement did this tune do to the gas mileage? I’ve seen sitting around 15mpg and I’m not sure if that’s normal or not. I’ve been on the ovtune files.
