I’ve run a couple of tanks through my truck (87 octane) with 10.0 on the sport throttle setting. I noticed the improvement in how smooth the shifts were, but after a few weeks the fuel mileage may be the biggest improvement for me. Everyone has a different setup/daily commute, etc. but having the heavy KO2s in 265/75R16, the tank average improved almost 2 mpg. Now I didn’t go from 9.0 to 10.0, but sat out a few versions but I’m thoroughly impressed. I had always thought my wife’s 4runner was more enjoyable to drive but now I’m not sure that’s the case.

For v10 I'm on the normal throttle setting. I tried all 3 on v9 and I think normal was best for me.

Just completed a 500+ mile round trip from Vegas to SoCal to pick up some parts for my car and kept track of the mileage and fuel consumption. Total mileage according to the trip computer was 526.4 miles and both fill ups totaled 23.993 gallons which equates out to be 21.94MPG. Pretty solid in my book . I've been on the KD Max train since v6/v7 and it has improved with each iteration. Much appreciated guys!

Went from v9 to v10 on sport throttle with MT. This tune is much better! The truck is so much more enjoyable to drive. And good power with 33" tires.

Hello all, I just got my '23 OR tuned by @sonhn317. I have put 100 miles on the truck with the tune waiting for the computer to learn.

The transmission holds on to third gear until 2100 rpm. Say you are driving 30mph down a side street it will stay there until 2100 rpm is reached before shifting into 4th. I am running the normal throttle, which is touchier compared to stock.

My question is does it hold 3rd gear like this with other users?

wow, you’re getting ~22mpg with that truck and MT? I have an OR manual and I’m lucky to get 18 on a highway only trip. Stock truck except 265/75 KO2. If I’m mostly in town it’s like 14mpg and I rarely shift above 2500-3000rpm.

I’d really love your feedback on the tune with a manual. Does is help with low end torque at low speeds? Driving around a parking lot I’m either bucking in first or lugging in second. Does it fix this?

what else has it done for your manual other than, it sounds like, better mileage?

1800-2200 is the “sweet spot” for power, and MPGs. If the truck holds 2100, it is doing what we want. At 1500 it is lugging and at 3000, it’s too high for regular driving. We target 2000.

    Hi Kreg

What can I expect for the manual? My main gripe with stock is lack of low end torque. Will it help with this?

I do this off road trip every year where I climb a logging road. My old ranger would effortlessly charge up the hill in second or third, but since I’ve been doing it with my Tacoma it luggs in second and third and I have to downshift to first for some bits. I had to resort to 4Lo last year in third or forth gear to make it work. Would the tune help with a situation like this?

Yeah, the only time I'm getting the bucking is if I'm creeping in bumper to bumper traffic in 1st gear with the AC on. Otherwise 2nd and 3rd gear between 1000-2000RPM is smooth and doesn't sound like it's lugging the engine at all.

Any engine knock? What octane are you running- 87 or 93?
My first 500 miles on v10 I had engine knocking when accelerating 3rd to 4th to 5th. I filled up with 93 and it stopped. I'd like to drop back down to 87 but would love some feedback from you M/T v10 gents. Thank you.

Nobody compared the VF pack to KDMP? My order still hasn't processed (website says operations resume after the 4th), but I was thinking a back to back to back comparison of stock/VF/KDMP might be fun. There's a dyno not far from me that does a three pull session for a reasonable price.

I'm more interested in usable area under the curve than I am peak numbers. Looking more for the resilient/reliable/longevity how-it-should-have-come-stock tune than I am trying to squeeze every last in.lb of torque out of it. I do generally run 91-93 but sometimes frequent areas where old 87 is as good as it gets.

I don't think you will find anyone comparing these offerings directly. The OVT tune packs are pretty dated at this point, meant to be more of a starting point for someone looking to custom tune their truck on their own. Matt stopped developing the Tacoma tunes some years back, and Kreg and Dave largely took over that project, as I understand it. The current KDMax offering has come a long way since the OVT2.0 days, and it's quite a bit more refined for sure (based on feedback from users that have been cycling through the various tunes since their inception). Lots of hours of testing and customer feedback has allowed for the development of a much-improved product at this point.

Admittedly, I'm fairly new to the Toyota truck tuning scene, so take my input with a grain of salt, but I've spent an awful lot of time reading through the forums and studying the history of KDMax out of a sense of curiosity, and this is consensus I've reached. Additionally, I personally experienced the improvements from v9.0 to v10.0, so I can confidently say the KDMax offering really does just keep getting better!

I got the tune yesterday on my 2018 MT after having the truck from new. So I had been driving it in stock form for five years.

Not much time with it, but I’ll share my experience thus far. I don’t typically wind out the engine. I usually shift below 3000rpms, and usually before that stock acceleration pull that comes in around 2800-3200 rpm’s. That means with a shift from first to second, there isn't much torque available when accelerating into second gear. It’s pretty sluggish coming into second and takes awhile to gain revs again. Same with second to third.

After five years of shifts, and knowing how if feels to go from 1-2, or 2-3, it’s night and day. Driving with my previous, subdued driving habits, by the time I’m into second there is no sluggishness getting back on the gas. Once the clutch comes out in second I’m right there in the power band. It’s lovely.

Starting in first feels like there is quite a bit more torque available. First was always very short in the Tacoma, and now it’s just buzzier, in a good way.

The best way I can describe it is it feels like my MT Tacoma has a new “sport mode” turned on now.

I’ll report back after more time and miles if I feel like I have more to add.

No engine knock that I've experienced, but i haven't used any monitoring tools to 100% confirm that. I use Premium 91 (as premium as Arizona, California, Nevada piss water gas can be) since I'm used to just buying it for my car anyway. Maybe a reflash/learned values reset would help your situation?
