Met up with Reza @rzathagza in Escondido this morning with his 2017 MT with 5.29's. Dialed him in with Pro-10.0 with Sport throttle. Reza was bit skeptical about tunes. After his test drive KDMAX-Pro-10.0 made a Reza a believer. He was very impressed with overall improvement. Thanks for meeting up so early this morning. Let us know how your enjoying the tune.
Looked like you were moving out pretty good when we headed for the freeway! :D

Submitting a follow up feedback post for @BuffGator who we tuned about a month back. Thank you for your time and thought put into this review, we are very happy to hear about your positive experience with @805 Tacoma Tuning and KDMAX!

“Got my 23 DCSB TRDOR (4k miles) tuned by @805 Tacoma Tuning about a month ago and wanted to provide some feedback.

Regarding customer service, Tom (aided by Dave @TWTaco) was great. I really liked that Tom and Dave had a QC process in place to make sure my Tacoma was taken care of. Very reassuring.

Regarding the tune, I went with the Normal setting. Tom was gracious enough to let me test out the Sport setting on his Tacoma but I felt like Normal was best for my driving style. Tom suggested I give the tune a couple of tanks of gas before settling on an opinion. So here we go…

Pre-tune: Inconsistent driving experience. Sometimes, my truck drove great. Sometimes, it gear hunted consistently. Sometimes, it shifted randomly for no apparent reason. Always, I was wondering what version of the truck I would get that morning and thinking about how best to use my accelerator to get the truck to drive smoothly. That should never happen on a new truck. I went with this tune because I wanted to stop thinking about gear shifting while driving.

Initial: Immediately noticed a difference in response. On the test drive, Tom warned me to be easy at first because the truck would be much more responsive. Glad he warned me - it definitely responded much quicker than before when I hit the accelerator. He also advised me to give it gas once I was on a safe stretch of road to really feel what the tune could do. Upon giving it a good amount of gas, I noticed that the truck would “jump” in the 3500-4000 RPM range in first gear. Tom and Dave explained that this was normal for this truck and would get better with time. Something to do with some valve engaging in that range. If I remember right, it’s similar to what a Honda VTEC does. Maybe Dave will explain it again in the comments. I’m no gear head and considering everything else was a significant improvement, I decided to take their word for it and provide feedback after the second tank.

2.5 tanks later: I love it. I rarely get to 3500 rpm so I don’t feel that “jump”. On the occasions that I do get past that 3500 mark, the “jump” is much less jarring. Additionally, I felt like the truck needed the first tank to get adjust to/learn the new parameters and I needed the second tank to get used to/trust the refined driving experience. The shifting points are much smoother and more predictable now. It’s just significantly better. Ideally, it would have just a little more “oomph” on initial acceleration but that’s a minor concern - I’m completely happy with the tune. Ultimately, it solved the problem that bothered me most - it consistently, predictably shifts and now I don’t think about shifting patterns while driving anymore!

Regarding gas mileage, I don’t see a big improvement but it definitely hasn’t gotten worse. My city mileage is around 18.3 mpg with this tune - can’t complain! Haven’t been on the highway for any appreciable distance so no idea what it would get there but guessing in the low 20s.

I wanted to write this candid feedback so folks weren’t wondering what to expect. Reading this thread had me believing that the truck would feel perfect immediately. That’s not going to be the case. It has some minor idiosyncrasies that you have to adjust to. Does that mean it isn’t worth it? Absolutely not. It’s an enormous improvement. Night and day. Probably the best mod I’ll make to this truck.

Thanks again to Tom @805 Tacoma Tuning for a great experience. Highly recommended if you’re in the area and looking to improve your beloved Tacoma.”

    Cross-post:

One week in, still haven't used a full tank of gas yet.
When I drive like a law-abiding citizen, I'm getting 21.x, up from 19.x before the tune.
When I drive it like she's capable of now :bikewheelie:, we're more in the 16 range.

Response is far better. The only adjustment that I'm still working on right now is when lifting after just starting. Yeah, I could fix that, just don't lift. But since the gear points are set higher, that lifting under ~20MPH means you slow down a lot faster than anticipated. I need to learn to moderate that lift, much like moderating how hard I put my foot into the pedal.

I don't know any (biblical or otherwise) besides Tom who actually owns a Taco. But when I see one in the wild I wonder if they have a tune, and how I can tell them to go get one.

The following is an emailed customer review of the 10.0 tune on his 2nd Gen 2.7L...

    Hi Kevin,
Reporting back with some updates on the tune. My trip to OBX was great! But I was a little disappointed with gas mileage. I averaged 21 MPG's round trip. It was mostly highway with the cruise control set around 65 MPH with no heavy load in the bed, just our luggage and a bicycle. I was hoping to get a little better with only having the 4 banger, but at this point I'll take what I can get. In the grand scheme of things 21 MPG's is pretty good for an older 4WD truck.
In more positive news, I went to a racetrack in Shippensburg yesterday which is approximately 141 miles one way. I just used my hitch carrier for my bike, so no trailer and the truck did great! I was able to cruise at 75 MPH with no trouble at all, which was something the truck previously struggled with to hold that speed when hauling a load. I also had quite a bit of weight in the bed with my tools, riding gear, pop up canopy, etc. so I was very impressed. It ate thru quite a bit of gas, but I guess that's my trade off for better performance.
In summary, I'm happy with how the truck performs with the new tune. I've found the MPG's for my commute are livable. For example, I have to commute to my office 3 days each week and it's about 18 miles each way. I used to have to put $40 in my Ram to get me through those 3 days and it would be running on fumes at the end of that third day. In my Tacoma, I put $30 in it and that gets me through the 3 days with a little left to spare. I'll take that with the increased response, torque and HP!
    Thanks again!
    -Dan

Hi Everyone. Just wondering if anyone can provide any compare / contrast info for v7.0 vs 10.0? I've been running with the 7.0 for almost 2 years now and am wondering if updating to 10.0 is something to consider? Thanks!

JP- Below is a text review I received last week from an owner who updated from an even earlier version, the 6.0.

I had Jeff upgrade my 2020 Tacoma TRD Sport from KDMax 6.0 Tune to the KDMax Pro 10.0 Tune and I immediately could tell I had more power and torque off the line. I even had a bit more power when passing on the highway with the new tune. I will do another update 500 miles after but so far the first 30 minutes of driving the truck I was having a lot of fun. It also helps that Jeff is a total professional and very easy to talk with and ask questions. Highly recommend to our Tacoma Community

Nyssa and Anthony brought me their 2023 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro on this rainy afternoon. Nyssa had been using a Pedal Commander to address the laggy throttle, but her and Anthony wanted a more complete solution to improve the drivability of this truck. Anthony reached out after seeing one of my posts on Facebook, and after realizing I lived only a few minutes away, he set up an appointment to get KDMax tuned!

Nyssa indicated she was accustomed to using the Pedal Commander at its Sport +2 setting, so I started her out on our normal throttle response. She returned from her initial test drive indicating it was definitely improved, but not quite there, so I reflashed the truck to our Sport setting. This was the sweet spot for her driving style!
It was great meeting your both and if you decide any additional adjustments are needed, or you move forward with that intake and exhaust...wink wink... please don't hesitate to reach out. I'll get you reflashed or adjusted as needed!

Tuned Matt awhile back. He contacted me after taking his truck to the dealer for an oil change. Turns out they had re-flashed him back to stock for some unknown reason. Met up and got him back on KDMax him for free. It's very rare for a dealer to do this, but know if it does happen your local KDMax tuner will take care of you and get you back on your tune. The KDMax tuning network prides ourselves on customer service. When you choose KDMax you can rest assured we will provide professional customer service, both before and after the tune.

I highly recommend upgrading to 10.

I’ve ran all of the kdmax tunes, starting at 6. The 9 and now the 10 tune are on a different level than the previous tunes.

I’m currently running a custom version of 10 and I really don’t think my truck could run any better. The tune is just silky smooth and refined.

For anyone thinking about installing the KDMAX Pro 10.0 Sport trim here is some information from someone who hasn’t had a tune ever. My goal is to give as much info to help anyone thinking about a tune that isn’t familiar with tuning.

The basics: 95% on road with little to no “overloading gear” attached. Not a “mall crawler” but more of an everyday truck to use.

I linked up with PIPYotaride for an install and the process was simple, easy and straight forward. We talked and Kevin helped me to understand which tune would most likely work the best for my situation. Specifically, I voiced my concerns of what I wanted to get from the tune (transmission shifting, throttle response and more) and he addressed each one. We talked the pro’s and con’s of each and eventually I asked for his opinion based on my needs. HE was Right, nailed it!

The test drive was very smooth and I could notice the truck reacting how I wanted. He coached me while driving about what the vehicle is doing and how the tune is working to do what I wanted. This was an important piece of the puzzle for me to understand how/why the tunes work as they are designed. So, the meat and potatoes.

The “constant transmission hunting for gears” is pretty much fixed. It still improves the more I drive it. I can tell because I drive the same route weekly. From the 1st day until day 13 (Today), it appears to incrementally improve the shifting points. I drive 4 days a week up a small, low grade hill which made the truck’s transmission go from 5th to 3rd gear in a back and forth motion. NOW, it rides smoothly in 4th gear and my mileage has increased. Secondly, the throttle response was quicker and seemed to “rev up” much smoother which helped it reach its desired gear. My personal opinion, I will give it 5 more tanks of gas before I decide, but I might lower the throttle a little.
The pro: highway driving is better with the quicker throttle response.
The con: makes driving in parking lots a little touchy.
Overall, I am willing to put more thought into parking lot driving to keep the throttle response for the highway. Still deciding. Lastly, the overall ride quality and drivability. The truck is much smoother to drive and it feels like I can do more with the truck than before. The torque is there, quicker acceleration and solid shifting makes it a fun drive and let’s face it, we all like that.

Final verdict: I feel it's more than worth it for the tune. Knowing now how tunes work and what they can do leaves me with the choices (which I didn’t have before) to explore different tunes as I see fit. I consider this a large stepping stone to seeing how I can modify my truck to suit my needs instead of the alternative. I like knowing that I have more say-so in how I want my truck to help me (better MPG’s, lower-end torque, etc..) without having to spend eons on TW asking redundant questions. For me, this forum has a wealth of knowledge about this truck and it’s one of the reasons I came back to TW.

Comparison: I had a 2020 Tacoma years ago with a pedal commander. Drove over 20,000 miles with it for a comparison. It helped me get a little more out of my truck so I’m not going to say anything bad about it. However, driving with a tune vice a pedal commander, you will notice much more from the tune. I think a tune is a better option for the money but that is my personal opinion for what it’s worth. Below are some number of how I tracked what the truck did. It might not be the best metrics to gauge the improvement but to me it helped make sense of what I bought. Finally I would like to highlight PIPYotaride for the work he did and how smooth the process was. I am confident that any issues/concerns I may have in the future, Kevin can address those concerns easily.

Reading of the “miles to empty” gauge after fill up.

1st tank: 375 Mostly longer drives highway (10-45mile trips)
2nd tank: 360 Mostly short distance city (2-9mile trips) Tested the power band.
    3rd tank: 385 Mostly mixed (highway/city)

    Timeline/specs:
    -2023 Tacoma 4x4 DCSB Off-Road
    -V6 Auto
    -Tune @ 220 miles

    12 Aug Purchase truck (new)
    20 Aug Tune installed

I really do, and I'm not the type to leave reviews for the most part. Shout out again to Kevin, he really did a great job and explained everything to me. It's rare to get that type of service these days.

Keith @mrkothegigolo long time customer came in this morning to get his 2022 4Runner updated to the Pro-10.0. Keith was running a custom throttle setting on his previous tune. This time he chose Sport throttle. It was good seeing you again Keith and nice meeting your wife. Enjoy the Pro-10.0.
