I'd suggest that you tell your tuner you may want to try both normal and sport so you can see which one you like best, because you aren't sure. I'd start with normal, see how it feels. If you want more throttle sensitivity then try the sport. That way you can make sure you are happy with your choice before you leave :)

After a proper tune you may think otherwise ;)

I agree. After your tune you won't think about a manual again. You can always use the sport mode to hold gears longer if you wish, and do some shifting. But the ECT will do all you need, unless you are pulling a lot of weight through the mountains.

Ok I have ran a few tanks of fuel on this new tune. First I had it set on lite throttle. I had a tank of 87 non ethanol fuel in the truck. I was commuting 75 miles each way for 150 total per day from Lake Stevens to Ferndale using I-5. Part of the drive is 60mph and part is 70mph. I was able to get the average fuel mileage up to 22mpg, the truck felt light and ran great. Calculated fuel mileage at fill up was 21.88 mpg. Best I have had so far. I filled up with reg 10% ethanol fuel. The truck did not like it. The truck felt heavy and I had to really press the peddle to keep it going up hills and just didn’t feel good at all. Got the average fuel mileage to 21.5 but couldn’t get it higher. Calculated fuel mileage at fill up was 20.8 mpg. This time I filled up with 92 10% ethanol fuel. It started running better. Holy crap I was able to get the average mpg up to 23.3 on the same drive. I was using etc mode and really liked the throttle response. So I got home and flashed the normal pedal tune. Truck was at half tank and was still able to get it to 23.1 average tank. So on the way home today I used etc with the normal throttle and liked it even better. Got home and average tank was @ 23mpg and the 75 mile trip average was 24.5 mpg. I will fill up in the morning and calculate the fuel mileage but I am expecting 22 mpg or better. Absolutely love the way the truck drives with this tune and love the mileage too. Might have to flash the sport mode this weekend and see how I like that. Overall very very happy. Thanks guys

edit: just filled up. Went 422.5 miles and put in 18.61g so 22.7mpg best mpg so far. Flashed sport throttle last night. Getting used to it.

If you're carrying a bit of extra weight or wind drag Sport is the way to go. And/or if you're an aggressive type of a driver, which I am.

I have to agree with the aggressive driver statement. That's why I'm glad that I had mine set to Sport.
Speaking of, I don't know if I posted a review. I'm loving the Sport setting, and my gas mileage didn't change with this last tank, which is good since I've been playing with the throttle a lot lately.
Did a highway drive with the cruise on. It's not downshifting into 4th as much, and when it does it doesn't stay in 4th long, so I guess we can say that there was SOME improvement in cruise. Hoping that the next update will be to deal with that if it's at all possible.
But otherwise, I'm loving the tune and the way my truck responds now.

Heck I just added 150+ lbs in a front bumper and winch and it doesn't seem to have affected my mpgs at all.

Damn son sounds awesome I too travel I-5 . Yeah this tune loves premium. I run 92 octane everyday. With 315/75/16s I get 20+ mpg . Best I've got was little over 21 mpg . My commute is about 73 miles oneway . We drive about the same miles and same speeds . Just your stock and I'm far from it . Lol

I will only run 92 from now on. It’s pretty much a wash compared to 87 but the truck runs so much better. I never had a vehicle that responded this way to a fuel change. Must use the knock sensor and advance the timing for the fuel. So if anyone says it doesn’t make a difference I have no clue why. No placebo at all.

Crap many of us spent some dollars on vf tuner and tunes and gas so why not use your tunes full potential. Many say they are happy with 87 octane . That's great for them . Me I'm power hungry, with that comes thirst . The sweet sweet nectar of 92 octane mmmm gets me stock mpgs baby .

If I didn't already have 2 cars running 93 octane (with a third on the way), I'd probably use it in my truck too.

I have been seeing posts about doing the LV reset in Techstream for the new tunes. I'm running one of the newest versions and I definitely don't get the mileage I see that a lot of others get. I haven't done any resets on any recent flashes. I average around 13-14 MPG.

Id be interested in trying a reset, just would like clarification on which ones I should try with a new reflash.

    Thanks

If you want a full reset, hook up to the truck with Vftuner, ignition on, don’t click Prepare ECM, click reset ECM, then when that is complete, click Clear TCU, it asks “are you sure?”, click yes, when that is complete, click Prepare ECM and flash the tune.
It is going to run bad for about a tank of gas while it’s learning, then it will settle out. Good luck! It sucks for a little while.

Current MPG after switching back to KDMAX Pro + XT normal throttle
    FFEBB000-D73F-4C65-AC57-A4681A653CE4.jpg

I had tried out the KDMAX Pro + XT early 6th gear variation with normal throttle to see if it gave a boost in MPG since I live in the lowlands.

I actually lost 1 MPG after 2 tanks. After changing back MPG was up almost immediately.

The current reading is on a stock truck except for RCI sliders. Driving was a 70/30 split of backroads and in town stop and go traffics. Speeds at 65-75 on backroads and interstate and 35-45 in town.

Thanks for the introduction @TWTaco! I'm looking forward to being a part of the solution. If this guys text messages to me don't paint a solid picture if the KDMAX tune, I don't know what does!

I had the pleasure of meeting the Tampa area KDMax installer Vic yesterday. We went over all the options and started with the KDmax Lite setting first. I could tell almost immediately that the shifting was far superior to the stock setting. It held gears better, it was smoother, even sounded better when gears shifted. But it didnt have that "oomph" I was looking for at take-off. Next we went to the Normal throttle setting. I backed out the space I was in and put it in drive, then my tires screeched as I took off! WOW! Its exactly like what everyone says: it drives like a different truck! It actually seems to be quicker (has anyone done any 0-60 comparisons with the tuned vs non tuned tacomas?), the shifting was absolutely perfect too: smooth, held gears better/longer...SOLD! No need to even try the Sport Throttle in my opinion. This is exactly what Ive been looking for. It was about a 30 minute drive home on the highway and my adaptive cruise control worked flawlessly too. I am extremely happy with this tune and Im glad I did this upgrade first (stereo is next). Vic is a great guy and very knowledgeable too. Thanks to the KDMax guys and Vic for making my truck so much more enjoyable to drive!
