I've got a '08 DCSB 4x4 TRD off road with roughly 95,000 miles on it and its not quite paid off yet but getting close/closer and I'm debating what I should do. I've always wanted a lifted truck but I've never had the upfront funds to do so. So I guess my question is, should I keep my truck and lift it with 100,000 miles on it when its paid off or look for a used 3rd gen with a lift or try to lift that one since it will have lower miles?

Which truck will be easier to fit 285/75/16 tires with wider wheels and will be less headache achieving this goal?

It’s asinine to go into debt for cars barring any extentuating circumstances.
Pay off the ‘08 and stash cash to either pay for the lift or save for a new model.

If you're living on the financial edge that you can't afford a lift, it makes no sense to jump into debt to the tune of $35,000.

OK, with your trade in, you're probably looking at $20,000. Still not going to be able to afford the lift.

Keep your truck. Pay it off. Continue to budget for the payments. Put half away for your lift and use the other half to pay off debt. In no time you will have the lift and less, not more debt.

100k is nothing for these trucks, keep your 2nd gen. pay it off, then do the lift. I have 185k on my 06, still runs great.

Keep the 08 lift the 08. I would never buy a lifted truck. You already know the truck 100k the truck isnt even broke in yet.

I’d say keep 08 if you get a decent tax return use that on a lift instead of a vacation or tv.

Def just keep unless you have no problem with a 35K loan.
Way i started seeing things is, a truck is a truck. My tacoma will carry the same shit from the hardware store and drive my family to the beach just the same as a new one.
Because of my $0.00 payment we were able to get my wife a 16 CPO GTI with all the goodies. So now i have my truck and my weekend toy. She has a sporty daily driver and the payments wont break the bank. Win, Win, Win. To each is own though, everyone's lives are different.

What are your goals with a lift? Just for looks?

Ok so as for opinions here is mine:
    • Go ahead and lift your truck after it is paid for.
    • You know the current condition, maintenance and habits of your truck and it is not worth it to go to a new/different truck.
    • If you want bigger or wider tires for aesthetics that is your choice, however your stock size "off road" tire is a great medium ground and plenty capable.

Pretty much for looks. I go down paths when hunting but overall my truck only sees pavement. When tires are needed, I would like to get wheels/tires that stick out a little past the fenders.

    Keep the '08.
And definitely if you planned on getting an Auto 3rd Gen.
All the Auto 3rd Gens I drove shifted a lot.
I can only imagine it get worse once it's lifted with bigger tires.

Again, I'd keep the '08 with the 4.0.
Just seems to tolerate the terrain better.

    I've got an 08 TRD Off-Rd DBLCB SR5, 110,000mi (bought 2 yrs ago w/ 82,000, running Mobil One twice a year,)

w/ Bilstein 5100 f/r, front @ 1.75, rear w/ Toytech AAL installed last year with NEW frame, and General Altimax Arctic 265-75-16 tires...

..so slightly lifted with the shocks and tires, bout 2 inches. No, the tires are not sticking out of the fenders, but it still looks cool and handles easily!

I/m keeping it til it's totally shot, or totalled!!

Did you get a frame replacement?

I feel the same way about getting on this site and just wanting a suped up lift. What I’ve ended up doing is upgraded tires to 265/75s with a more aggressive AT tread. And then just went with takeoff TRD off-road front shocks for 1” front lift and added a 1/4 top spacer for an extra 1/4-1/2” and then did a 1.5 AAL for the rear.

Really mild but looks good without looking like the truck skipped leg day. Next step is 4.5” bs wheels to push tires out just a bit more than stock and also keeping in mind upgrade to 285s or 255/85s in the future when I lift it a bit more and I’m all set.
