if the function drops to 15% it would be dialysis...

docs think the 36% may be my new baseline since it's at that level with the new diet and medications, etc...

only thing im concerned about is that they had to take me off my blood pressure medication because of the kidney function, so i really have to stay on track as i don't want to shoot up the blood pressure...

well, figures life could only get more challenging...

i finally got my diagnosis last week...

    Stage 3 Chronic Kidney Disease...

there are only 5 stages with Stage 5 referred to as Final Stage...

ok, so i make sure i make all my doctor visits...

then, get a call today that Medi-Cal wants to deny me coverage... i haven't had a job in 3 years, my wife hasn't worked in 6 years (stay at home mom to my 2 kids), and they seem to think i have too much money saved up in the bank, which i keep explaining to them are the college funds for my daughters...

i lived an honest life all these years to be legit for my kids, and now it's biting me in the ass...

    FML...

Hang in there Mike. Fight the system and appeal their decision. You should look into kidney foundations and see what they require for assistance.

they actually tried to deny my application because of my daughters' trust fund... we had to get a letter from the bank indicating that it was their education fund...

now they said that our IRA accounts are assets... we can't even touch them until we are 65 years old... all they see are the $ signs...

Is there someone at the hospital that can help you find alternative ways of payment? Business office perhaps? I believe they should have any kind of forms or applications available for you to fill out. They don't want to lose out so I'm sure they have ways. Do you have a family member who can help you research this?

can't afford a lawyer, and i think they handle Social Security Disability cases since it's mediated by a judge...

Medi Cal is financial assistance for folks with no medical insurance and no means of paying...

im going on 3 years of unemployment and now that im in Stage 4 Kidney Disease, im in and out of the clinic every week, so finding a company to hire me full time with my health has been a challenge...

my self employment just barely covers my basic family expenses so having to pay $1,300 a month for health coverage is a luxury I can't seem to reach...

im prepping my fourth appeal now...

Sorry to hear about all this. Good luck. You just cant win when it comes to medical care you either cant afford insurance and then if you have it they want to fight you on everything it seems.

im actually dealing with the business office...

i have a great advocate there who has been trying to get it approved, but the "Verifier" is refusing to budge...

they want me to liquidate my daughter's college fund and my retirement fund before they can deem me "needy"

so next step is to go to the bank and close the accounts...

If she is under 18 you can put her fund into a CUGMA account (Gift to minors) at your bank, which cannot be touched until she is 18. Stipulate that it is for college only. You can have your retirement roll over into that new cugma account.

So in actuality, the money is no longer yours. It will be under HER name and as yours but you are not allowed to touch it. Only she can at the age of 18. You don't have to buy stocks, you can transfer the existing monies into it.

As minors, kids cannot purchase or own stocks themselves. You can buy the shares in your name, if you have a brokerage account, or through a custodial account set up under the Uniform Transfers to Minor Act (UTMA) or the California Uniform Gifts to Minors Act (CUGMA). Under the UTMA or CUGMA, the investment is held in an adult's name in custody for the child until the child reaches 18 (21 in some states).

we got the bank to submit documentation about that account as it can't be touched until she is of age, then Medi Cal countered that because we are listed on her account as guardian, we have access to the money...

it was such BS, so the bank responded that it needed a guardian listed on the account but that it could not be touched, so they finally exempted that account...

but with the retirement account, my initial application is now denied, so i have to cash out that account and take my losses, then re-submit my application...

what sucks with that now, is they are saying that even though i will get approved, it will only be applicable for medical services going forward... i still end up liable for the $85,000 for my hospitalization from September until the end of February...

it's a clusterfuck... im waiting for my advocate to call me back now to see if my new appeal will work...

    keeping fingers crossed again...
