OK.... Im not a ford guy but why would you say its big for no reason. That's like saying a VW bug is ridiculously small for no reason. It is what it is. They where not any harder to park than a f-350 crew cab and probably easier than a one ton truck with a long bed. I guess I just never understood what people had against them and did not like the way they kind of forced ford to stop making them.

Yes I just thread jacked my own thread:p

I've heard the same thing about it being illegal. I leave mine in like every other truck/suv I see on the road but I'd bet it was the insurance companies who lobbied to make it illegal so they could make more money. Anyhow, I was thinking of making a step that goes into the receiver. You can buy them but it wouldn't be strong enough to keep the jackoffs off of my rear bumper. In the 4 accidents I've been in (not in the taco), ALL of them have been aholes who hit my rear bumper and NO, NOT BECAUSE OF BRAKE CHECKS ~ they're just morons who's vehicles don't work unless they're on the phone.

It may sound silly but throw a tennis ball over the ball and leave the receiver on. Technically it would act as a marker for something hanging behind the rear of the truck. Could end up saving you from a ticket if you explain it like that to a cop, I never knew it was illegal in some states.

Be careful leaving the receiver in, they can rust in over time and become a real problem to remove. I did this on an older truck and it took a lot of PB Blaster, a demo maul and center punch and a torch to finally get the receiver out. Next time, never seize!

I heard the same about VA but never had a problem.
My 1st gen had 3 rear ends...that's some strong bumper and tow hitch!! Destroyed the rear enders and little dents in the bumper with no chrome chips. Matching dents on ether side paid 400 buck a piece :p
Never had one rust in...probably cause it got used...a ceder shim stops the rattle in the mean time ;)
    Stolen yes  beeches!

    1. It will rust = aintsize
    2. It rattles = ceder shim
    3. It could be stolen = locking hitch pin
    4. Its illegal where I live = tennis ball marker, red flag, I still think this is

I'm thinking about making a instructional video for this mod

Yeah the kid was scared....my brother and a good friend were with me and he was alone. Brother said I had look on my face like I was going to kill him. Then I saw there was no damage other than his cars bumper and I kind of Laughed in his face and told him to be careful.

I've been saved twice by mine! The rattle does get annoying I really need to shim that thing.

No shims required on mine... never had a problem with rattle at all. No rust even tho I got rust problems everywhere else. I do tow with it often and its become a very useful tool lately;)

I think leaving the ball in is illegal because it does a lot more unecessary damage to other vehicles, they make bumpers for a reason. Not hate'n, just saying.

i killed a taco once with a triball back in ny during a huge snow storm. i was in my 1T plow truck backing up because there was a street plow truck in front of me backing up. tacoma slid down a hill like 35-45mph into my tri-ball hitch... base model 5lug 1st gen with cali plates and street tires vs. 10,000 plow truck (7k truck with 9' plow and 500# sand/salt mix.... im guessing the californian didnt have much exp. in snow. It woulda been bad if i wasnt there. he would have slid into a busy road.

im glad i didnt have my salter on because the little ahole didnt have insurance....

but not a scratch to my truck. his truck died...

    Small lift and a topper!
Leaving the ball on makes your frame or hitch more likely to be damaged - the bumper is meant to take a hit - it hits the frame head on, and has some crumple built into it. The hitch is lower than the frame so when it is hit, it bends down, rather than pushes in. Even a relatively gentle hit can put a kink in your frame, or damage the brackets on your hitch. I've seen lots of trucks with kinked frames from light accidents with the ball installed - and most of the time they didn't even notice it was damaged until they tried to change something out down there.

I think most laws are dumb, but I'm not interested in kinking my frame from a low-speed accident.
