Start with protective items... Weathertechs, sliders, etc. I started off saying the Tacoma HAD to be modified becasue they didnt offer the mods I wanted... there was also this screw up with my order and I didnt get the JBL sound system, just a disk changer so that came out and a Kenwood DNX9960 went in in its place. But of course to protect the sound system you have to get tint and a Viper alarm. You only need to justify about 3 or 4 mods... the other mods just protect the truck or its mods. For example the bed needs a tonneau cover to protect thigs in the bed... I showed how cheap a soft cover was compared to a roll top or hard cover. The bed mat is cheap protection for the bed so things dont slide and dont scratch the plastic. After the first off roading trip I showed her how my crossover pipe got smashed and the under carriage armor got the nod etc.

A winch costs less than just 2 uses of a tow truck to unstick you. You are bound ot get stuck at least twice in your life if you offroad right? Its a money saver and she needs not to worry about getting stuck in the woods with you. You cant have a winch without a winch bumper to mount it.

Hard sells... the supercharger, a lift and tires while your suspension and tires are new, a HIGH end audio system. Everything else is easy.

Such a great point! It's easy to loose sight of enjoying life with work, everyday stress and worries. What's the point in getting up everyday to make a paycheck if you don't allow yourself to spend a little every now and then. I don't know you from Adam but I've lost family to cancer and wish you and yours nothing but the best in your fight. Prayers are with you.

I might also add that I use the 20% rule. I.E. if I spend $100 bucks on a new rifle case...I spend $20 on a nice little gift for her. Lessens the blowback for not asking prior to buying.

When you need new tires, also grab a lift kit, sliders, new front and rear bumpers... (edit): and a winch with the bumper.

I think you're spot on with that, the wife likes my truck but she won't notice anything short of a 6" lift

This is true, I sometimes just go ahead and buy something that's cheap without asking my wife knowing she will bitch, but after the ass chewing I still have what I bought. :D

Tires are easy to convince. The stock tires are truly unsafe in my opinion. If you live with any kind of traction issue areas (snow/ice/water).

Personally, I don't have an issue with mods... cause it's all my money. I just don't have enough money...
