Started tearing the 4Runner down yesterday. I read somewhere before that there would be an issue with the speedo when using this in a 1st gen taco. Not sure what that is yet. Also passenger side cv axle is being a pain to remove from the diff. May need to break out a crowbar

I haven't had the chance to work on the 4x4 system yet but I've made some changes including amp box with fans and switchback leds for the turn signals. If anyone has any questions feel free to hmu

Ive got everything ready for the swap. Been put out of commission for 6 weeks due to surgery however. I did have a question though that maybe someone here can help with. The transmission I'm using for the swap is the A340F out of a 96 4Runner. What needs to be done in order for the speedometer to work properly

I would think that if you're using the same gauge cluster and tire size it should work just fine?

    Hope you're feeling better boss

Depends on if it uses a speedo cable or a gear. Tacomas use a speedo gear to get its reading

That's the thing. I think my transmission is gear. But I've heard the transmission on the 4Runner may be cable. It's been really confusing trying to figure everything out with that particular problem. From what I can tell they may have the same speed sensor, which would be great

04 Tacoma A340E vs 96 4Runner A340F. There are different versions of each of these unfortunately. Just depends on the year

I purchased the front drive shaft and front diff mount brackets from a tw member so we're getting very close. Just waiting to hear back from a tw member/ buddy to see if we can swap front diffs so I won't have to open the clam up. (The diff I have is 3.73 and he has a 4.10) hopefully we can work out a trade.

Only thing left is going to be cvs and it'll be time for the conversion.

Made this little bracket for my chase/dust lights. Just need to make the other side.

Not conversion related but I seemed to have fixed my evap issue. One of the lines at the canister to the vent valve was off on the valve side, just hanging there. I'm not sure if from previous owner or what but the truck seems much happier. I wouldn't think this would have such a large effect on the vacuum on the motor given the distance but wow the trucks throttle response and low rpm performance has increased noticably. Happy I crawled under to investigate.

These year trucks have the same front differential and will work just fine for what you want to do. Manual or ADD front differential will work for a manual locking hubs 4x4 set up. You can tell the difference by looking at the tube. ADD will have a rectangular hole where the actuator goes. The manual will have a solid tube with no cut out.
The j-style transfer case is the way to go for sure.

gotcha, thanks man! I'm working on getting the whole hub/cv assembly now, next step is finding a transfer case, diff and I'm going to go 4x4 output shaft instead of the whole transmission.

No problem, you can get the entire hub assembly from car-parts.com. Look under knuckle. When u buy the knuckle u get the hub as well. In addition u can get the lockouts from the same place. Then u have pently of options for cvs

seems a bit pricy but yeah atleast it's all there. Didn't you have lift knuckles on your truck already ? Or was it just a tower or something. I remember over hearing someone say u had a pretty cool set up
