I have to be honest with you guys. I have been weighing out buying a kenwood in dash or a pioneer in dash navigation unit. I went to fry's yesterday and it turned out that they had both the Kenwood 8120 and the Pioneer Z3 on demo right next to each other. I was playing around with the Kenwood and must say the the navigation itself is a lot nicer than the pioneer's, but the menus and sound quality are terrible. The Pioneer is a less responsive than the Kenwood in terms of touching a button and how long it takes to do something but I still have a bad feeling about the kenwood. It sounds like the 8120 has great features but has poor audio quality for a stock speaker application. Has anyone tried out the Z3 from Pioneer?

This is the kind of feedback I like to hear. I haven't found anywhere locally that has either unit to play with so I was going just off feature list and a couple of reviews. I have always been a Pioneer fan and always thought that Kenwood was more of a second-rate brand. However, I haven't kept up with the car audio community in a really long time, so I thought that maybe they had come around...

so what would people go with here on navigation? I am now stuck between the pioneer and kenwood but willing to look at other options for my 09' and with all the sales coming up i would love some suggestions on this, thanks.

Just keep in mind that the Kenwood has Garmin navigation. That's one of the best navies out there. I've always been a Pioneer guy, but after getting a Kenwood, I am pretty impressed.

This is the only issue I have with the Kenwood. It takes about a minute to boot up.

I'm using the JBL system that my TRD Sport came with. It actually sounds better with the Kenwood. I think the sound would be a lot better with any aftermarket unit. I'm not an audiophile, but the sound is so much better...crisper, clearer, better balanced, and better bass.

With the Pioneer, I bet you probably wouldn't even notice the difference between it and the Kenwood with regards to sound. But, that's just assuming you're not a sound expert.

    A few bolts are different.
Take into account also That some of those displays in the big box stores like fry's do not have the best sound because of the quality of install work. The display boards that the units are sitting in have been switched out time and time again with shotty connections and less care sometimes. All I'm saying is look around and try to check out the H/U in a couple different stores. Personally I have always had good luck with the Kenwood stereos I have owned.

yeah i have the JBL with the subwoofer in it right now and dont really want to change out the amp or any of that stuff and keep it how it is but would really like a navigation unit, and was thinking of getting the pioneer because i can't find a store that even sells the kenwood.

My 8120 comes in tomorrow and I can't wait to get it installed! However, I'm replacing all the door speakers, amping them and putting in two 10s with a separate amp as well. Should sound pretty good... :)

I'll be adding it to my "build" thread next week once it's all done. I've already dampened the floor and back wall, now just need to do the doors and possibly the roof. I'll have enough material, just need to decide if I feel like doing it...

No, it would be mainly for reducing ambient noise from coming in.

oh ok i was just wondering how you get to the speakers in the ceiling and it would be a great idea to do the roof cause it is very loud when it rains

I'm not sure how much it's actually going to help, but I'll have the material left over, so why not, right? :)
