Totally agree. People get very judgmental about diets. I don’t get it.

I tell people I can’t eat something because it makes me sick or I won’t eat something out of fear it has something in it that will make me sick and they’re like “well how sick do you get?”

    o_O

Get after it man! Cheat week, is better than cheat life. haha

You do you.... Do your research about it and stick with it...Most the time it will turn the other way pretty quick, they will worry about you questioning what they are eating. Especially after people start to see you succeed.

Starting off by saying sorry for the long rambling post.

Ok so Ill play the asking question game here because keto has interested me but for multiple different reasons (not all of them are listed below) I haven't done enough research or started planning out anything.

Some things about me before we get stated with the questions.
CURRENTLY 36 (37 on the 26th) 5'10 and my weight fluctuates between 201 and 208 depending on what I have eaten the last few meals.
Former 3 sport athlete in high school and up until last year still was playing a high level of adult flag football and softball.
In 2013 I was in probably the best shape I have been in since my senior year of high school because I was training for this race called hood to coast (200 mile relay race) as well as doing crossfit 5 days a week sometimes 2 times a day (at that point I had been doing crossfit for about 2 years and was starting to get into competitions). At this time I was roughly 185lb and eating cleanish. I felt pretty good at that weight but know there is a few more pounds I could have lost. Went strictly paleo for 60 days. It was alright but was hard on the family as a whole because ALL of us were active (sports and different work schedules) and never really home to cook the proper dinners and stuff. so instead of trying to MAKE paleo work, my wife and I just ate pretty clean for 5-6 days a week and cheated on Sundays. I currently am on light duty because of should surgery which means I'm sitting in front of 4 computer screens all day but my normal job is labor intensive and I want to get back to being active and Olympic weight lifting after I'm healed.

    On to the questions.
    1. Where are some good online recipes to start looking at? We went to my in-laws for Christmas and 80 of them are keto and I could wrap my head around some of the things they said they were eating. ( don't quiz me because I don't remember much about conversation after mayonnaise salad)

    2. Something that has shut me down from looking into is my wife is type 1 diabetic (for those who don't know what type 1 is... her body produces NO insulin and it can't be cured by diet and exercise), because of that she keeps talking about how ketoacidosis is bad for diabetics. While I totally agree with her on that point I feel like sometimes shes using out dated info to form an argument(like ketosis vs ketoacidosis AKA DKA). She also hasn't talked to her endo about Keto either. Anyways what if anything do you guys know about a diabetic doing Keto?

    3. Is there any science on the effects the high fat content of this diet has on heart function or clogging of the arteries? my family has a history of heart issues and I don't really want to be adding to the problem.

    4. Currently I'm downing a lot of caffeine per day(coffee, Energy drinks, Soda). Will Keto help with feeling sluggish by 1ish?

    5. I currently crave carbs and sugars like its going out of style (I don't know why but it started about 2 weeks ago), will Keto help me kick this craving?

I'm sure there will be many more questions but I feel like reading on some of this tread you guys know a few things and could at least point me in the right direction with links and other things.

Like I said sorry for the long rambling post and thank you in advance.

I haven't been tracking for couple months now. Not sure really where I'm at as far as ketosis goes but still feel great. Hit a new low 194.6 Sunday. 47lbs in 7 months. 190 is my new goal for the new year 2019. Should be pretty obtainable as I still have quite a bit of fat on me.

I need to drink more water for sure. I've been sucking at that. Have a month left in my p90x3 program... Looking forward to finally finish that after having it for 4 or 5 years. not sure What ill do after maybe the OG p90x.

    Stay Motivated Folks!

    Excellent questions.
I cannot answer all of them but I will get back to you this evening with the ones that I can.

As far as your wife and Keto that is certainly a conversation to have with a doctor.

So I'll answer to the best of my knowledge here...
    1) Depends what type of keto you're going for. If you want to drop weight quickly, you're gonna be like me and regulated to pretty much meat/cheese/eggs and maybe half a can of green beans per day. Start checking labels on everything. Stuff you think "hey that's pretty healthy"...40 carbs. Nope. If you just want to lose a couple pounds or just maintain where you are, then go with whatever Atkins is dishing these days, I think its 20 or 50 carbs per day with veggies. Seems to work.

2)Not knowledgeable enough about that to comment on it.

    3) So, I don't know the science, but I know my father in law and myself both showed lowered cholesterol counts from the doctor after doing this for like 6 months, and that was with bacon and eggs almost every morning, butter on everything (within reason) and alot of meat. I think the thing is that people don't realize how much cholesterol and fat they intake from just every day eating and alot of foods these days are still super high in fatty content. So while It seems like the high fat low carb diet would skyrocket your cholesterol and fat content....it doesn't. At least for me and a few people I know that have done it.

4)You can still drink coffee, just nothing in it. Stevia is fine, or w/e fake sugar you like. I don't. Shit makes me think I just drank a science experiment. All those energy drinks are pretty bad for you anyways.
So yes, some people say they felt an energy boost. IMHO the only energy boost there is from this diet is your body gets healthier because you're not eating like shit anymore. That's what I felt. But I know there is an energy loss from this diet. Your body works on carbs. Cut those out and it start burning fat. IE Ketosis. It's not the same though, since your body obviously doesn't just want to eat itself to keep you alive. But it will. I feel tired often, and have been taking pre-workout before I go to the gym. When I don't take anything before the gym I always feel like I hit empty much quicker.

5)Will Power. Will Power. Will Power. Keto won't kick the craving for you. You will. Kind of like quitting anything, You have to quit carbs and sugar for keto anyways. I'd say the first two weeks are the roughest.

Here's my normal day lately that loses me about 20-25lbs a month.
    Breakfast- Atkins shake 1g carb
    Atkins bar- 1-2g carb

Lunch- (usually a late lunch around 1-2) Some form of meat, half a can of green beans, usually split the can and the meat and meal prep for the next day. A can of green beans has 7 carbs total in it, split it in half, thats 3ish carbs.

snacks- string cheese, cheese sticks, small handful of almonds (be careful, they are easy to over eat on), atkins bars (also be careful, they can be a good substitute for sugar and you can over eat with these as well, I try to limit to 2 MAX a day), macadamia nuts

    WATER
    WATER
    WATER
    WATER
Drink water. I probably drink at least 100oz per day of the shit, and use the bathroom about every 20 munutes. But its really good to flush your system constantly. imo

Keto acidosis is not ketosis. They are nowhere near the same thing. Ketogenic diets are great for individuals with either kind of diabetes because it reduces blood sugar and you avoid spikes in blood sugar as well.

Fat does not cause heart disease, carbs do. Therr has never been a strong correlation between a high fat dietand heart disease, never. The scientific community has embrased an essential false idiology, why? I’m not sure. But high fat diets do not cause high cholesterol or heart disease

You feel like crap because you consume a lot of caffiene. You should stop all consumption for a while or be diligent to reduce your intake. Trust me you will sleep better, have more energy, and will feel better.
Keto will help you not have blood sugar fluctuations that will leave you tired but honestly if you abuse caffiene that will be a larger reason why you crash at 1pm and not carbs.
Look up sleep hygiene. Follow those guidelines and drastically reduce the caffeine if not remove it. Youll feel worlds better.
I recently drastically reduced my intake because I was experiencing adrenal fatigue, insomnia, high BP (I’m 27),heart palputations and anxiety attacks. I made several life changes to better my health but nothing made the difference like reducing caffiene did.

    Cravings
You have cravings because your body needs something. Figure out what it is. If your diet is balanced and healthy you should not have any cravings. Your body should be getting everything it needs.
Keto is higher in fat and will help you feel satiated. But it depends on why you are getting cravings. That has to be identified first.
Is it really fat? Is it salt? Is it your body is so dependent on carbs you crave them to regulate your blood sugar?

Keto overall will help balance your diet and regulate your blood sugar. You should feel better when doing it however you need to do it correctly.
You are asking a lot of a diet. Keto may help you but as stated you’ll need to change other lifestyle habits to correct those things. Keto won’t help you with fatigue if you don’t have good sleep habits. It won’t help with cravings if you still don’t maintain a balanced diet etc.

I don't think much of those subscriptions. Anyone can research what they need to eat to sustain this diet. It will all rely on my desire to maintain the diet. I won't spend $60 when the info is already available.

    Agreed.

My wife spent a couple bucks on a keto cookbook but she likes them & has a spot in the kitchen where she likes to keep them.

I agree I’m not up for paying people for free information online.

New diets are hard because you have to make new habits and “go to recipes”. But once you do that its much easier. People just need to have the self discipline to get through that period.

Well I start on the 2nd and I was 218....this morning 213... So far so good (probably mostly water). The "Carb Manager - Keto and Low Carb Diet Tracker" is a nice little app to keep you conscious of you carb intake. ( https://www.carbmanager.com/ ) The app made me realize I wasn't getting enough fat when I previously tried Keto.

I gave blood last week also we will see if Keto will clean up my numbers too.

A couple of keto friendly pizza crusts tonight. They both turned out pretty good! We could actually eat the pizza like pizza, not with a fork. One with cheese, almond flour & egg. The other with cheese, cauliflower & egg. Both topped with some fresh made garlic infused olive oil as the "sauce".

Looks good. My wife and I eat the pizza crust using either almond or coconut flour. It’s almost a weekly meal for us.
