The problem is that it's the dealerships spreading the misinformation :censored: When I bought my Taco, I asked about the tires because I live on gravel roads. They told me the kevlar was equivalent to an 8 or 10 ply tire.... 3 flats in the first 5000 km, and I haven't been able to drive 'er since the beginning of September... need to wait for the snow to hit so I can get it out and get new tires.

Not shocking. I like to think it is ignorance and not deception. Kevlar is a great marketing tool. People recognize the name and associate it with bullet proof vests so you know it has to be tough, but lets not forget that flouride was also used as rat poison. The way that Goodyear is using it isn't to stop speeding bullets.

Those things are like band-aids. I wouldn't want to leave it in long term. I'm not saying that they can't, or don't hold up. But, having the tire removed and a real patch would give me more confidence.

The sidewalls are not very rigid, they flex quite a bit and provide a smooth ride.

Maybe it's just propaganda stuck in my head from my short lived tire and oil change career.

I did use one on my Tacoma. But, I replaced the tires shortly thereafter. I do keep a patch kit in the 4runner as well.

Always have the tire dismounted, inspected, and patch/plugged from the inside. A plug is fine to get you down the road in a pinch so carry a kit with you, but over time a number of things can go wrong that could lead to a catastrophic tire failure, usually at high speeds. My life isn't worth the $20 I saved by plugging it myself.

Yes, plugs will almost always outlast the tire, but the gamble isn't worth it to me. I have personally seen the cumulative damage a plug can do over time that is not visible on the outside of the tire (used to be an engineer with a major tire manufacturer).

E load does not have more "plies" than SL rated tires. The difference is in the thickness, construction of the rubber and compound. Tires used to have "plies" but not anymore. They are still rated like that though. E is rated like an old 10 ply tire, D is rated like a 8 ply, C is rated like a 6 ply etc.

Those things saved my ass many times. Had 3 out 4 of my E load Pirelli scorpions plugged, no leaks at all. It was a garbage tire though, never ever i would buy them again.

Had those plugs in 3 out of 4 of my tires for about 3 years. Absolutely no issues, i have full confidence in them. I guess if you dont insert the plug correctly, it might come out eventually.
