I just have a basic key for my 16 SR and just learned from my Dealer that extra keys must be programed at the Dealer ... even for a basic key!!
Anybody know different ... please Speak-Up!!

The key has a transponder chip in it that has to be programmed by a locksmith or a dealer. You can turn the ignition lock but it'll just act like there is no spark. It's not the same thing as programming the buttons on the key which you can do. Dealers charge from zero to $150 or so, locksmiths usually $50 or so. Not all locksmiths have the $5000 machine or know how to do it.

It's a Song & a Dance, Literally. I don't have the exact method to program your fod off the top of my head, but it goes something like this...
Turn the Key on, Turn the key off, Turn the key on, Turn the key off, Open the drivers door, close the drivers door, Open the door, Close the door, turn the key on, turn off, turn on, turn off, turn the key to acc, push the fod door lock, if it work your good to go, if not, do it ALL over again, I kid you not. This in not the exact code but something VERY similar. I bought 2 xtra fod's and had to do this song & dance many times. LOL
P.S. this is just for the FOD, You have to take the key to a locksmith or Stealership to program the key.

It depends on the year model also. I believe 2009 and newer require programming at dealer or locksmith.

Ya, I looked into it and it needs to be programmed into the trucks computer. I did see this on eBay, but unsure if it would work.image.jpg

jnmargarit, might want to change the title of this thread, you have it as "KEY FOD PROGRAMMING", but your talking about the key itself. All answers have been given on how to program the Fod and a Locksmith, Stealership or ^^^this device may work for the key.

Thanks guys. And my bad for the confusion, it is just programming the key that I was trying to figure out. The only way is to have the dealer or a locksmith do it or to purchase that key programming device.

I did, but never got the key to be programmed with the ignition.
Life has taken it’s busy schedule with a new baby and constant work all over. I was going to order the programmer off eBay but never got around to it. I ve completely forgotten about it till now.

any update on this? I have the key fob but and I can get the car to "programming mode" but for some reason when pressing the lock and unlock simultaneously for 1.5 seconds and then the lock for 2 seconds, nothing happens. It works for the original separate key fob from key though. PLEASE HELP!

Just another endorsement of the steps in post #6. Finally replaced the failing FOB for my '07 with a new OEM one, and it worked like a charm.

I ordered a replacement fob and key from Amazon for $21 last week. I have a 2013 without engine immobilizer (non chipped key) but VIP 3200. Instructions to program fob came with it. It works great. Don't buy the key blank though because no one wants to cut it unless you buy it from them. I got lucky at Lowes, they were out and the guy cut the one I bought for free. New key and fob that work for $21, I was happy.
