    Good morning Tacoma World:

I am wondering if there is a way to purchase and program a new key fob for my 3rd gen without the help (and $400 cost) of the dealer.

One of my keys was misplaced by an employee at my gym, and after much back and forth with the corporate office they said they would give me $294 to replace the key.

Silly me, when I got a quote it was $294.00 for the key, however the quote did not include labor which supposedly is $125.

Considering my replacement fund is only $294, and the actual replacement would cost about $420, is there any way I can purchase a new fob online and set it up myself, avoiding the excessive cost? What other options might I have? I have the key-less entry / push to start.

    Thanks in advance!

I’d go back to the gym and tell them it’s going to be more than 294.00. No way I’d eat that additional cost.

Yeah, that is what I just did. I emailed her back however I already signed a settlement agreement for the $294.

I plan to use the 'Mistake of Fact' defense in attempts to void the K assuming they do not want to cooperate. I would essentially argue that there was a bilateral mistake in the facts upon which we agreed, and this mistake causes the act in which the contract remedies to be impossible - i.e. replacing key fob. Sadly this was my own mistake so it could go both ways. I am a paralegal and work in a massive law firm with many attorneys so tbh I will ride this thing out just because I can  hopefully it all works out!

eBay has genuine Toyota keyfobs from Toyota for 130-200$ and when I lost mine I went to a local locksmith who did the programming for 50$

When i bought my '16 Sport, it only came with one fob & no tail gate key. (GMC dealer)

I recently bought a new OEM virgin fob & key on eBay from a locksmith for $120. Not all locksmiths have the ability or the "tools" to program a Toyota/Lexus fob. I took it to my local Toyota dealer, and had it done for $90. No big deal.

I removed the tailgate lock cylinder, took it to a local locksmith, and he made me 2 keys to replace my missing key, for $28.

I bought the key from my local dealer for $150 and 90 for programming, they screwed up and made 2 keys I wound with both keys and programming for $300.00.

I bought keys from E-Bay, they would nor work, sent them back waiting to see if they will refund.

Why did you not have the locksmith change the lock cylinder to match the ignition switch? My 2017 came with the same key for the ignition and tailgate.

Just google what you’re looking for then find yourself some locksmith that can reprogram it. You’ll be well under the $294, idk why some people insist on getting ripped by the dealership?
