I totaled my 16 Tacoma earlier this year. I brought a 2017 to replace it. I was going through my stuff today and found the spare 2016 key fob. Can I take it to a Toyota dealership and get it program for my 2017? I have the spare key for the 2017, but doesn't hurt to have another spare rather than throwing it away.

Some independent key shops can program them cheaper than the dealer, could be worth checking around.

We purchased a third fob and had all 3 reprogrammed by a local locksmith shop. Much cheaper than the dealer. The one I worked with even does the work for the majority of the dealers in our area. I'm sure you can find a local shop that will program it for you, they just need the right equipment.

Speaking from experience with Hondas, the vehicle itself is programmed to the immobilizer code in the fob. The fob has an immobilizer chip with a unique code that is entered into the vehicles anti theft system.

I could be wrong, things may be different with Toyota, but I would imagine that you can get your existing fob to be recognized.

When we added our third push button start fob I payed about $140 for the new fob and about $$60 for the programming for a total of $200.
