Also check out the locations link in my signature to see if someone local to you can do it (may cost some $ but not compared to what the dealer will charge.

Yup, any module on a CAN bus will have to be registered/recognized to work on the vehicle. Nope, this is wrong. After much more experience with this vehicle I've only found in my perusal of Techstream one module that needed to be VIN registered to the vehicle.

Did you buy, and from where, only the black box BCM that plugs into the FuseBox/Relay junction box or the whole thing together.

I don't know just what you replaced in the overhead console area and if it too has a connection to the CAN bus.

Overhead console was purchased and installed first. They are known to fry a trace on the board when the dome light bulb is shorted on installation so that was my first attempt at a fix. It fixed half of my problem which was the Map & Dome lights would not shut off when doors were closed. So, with that, it was obvious the MB ECU was damaged because lights would not activate when doors were opened. Replacing the MB ECU fixed everything but created this fob issue. Overhead console came from Sparks in NC and the MBECU came from Ellis in GA. I removed the entire Junction Box in order to easily split the ECU from it and replace with the new one. It was quite a simple task once exposing it by removing the appropriate dash panel.

Damm, you started all this by the simple hand slip during a replacement of an illumination bulb. I will have to watch myself more closely. I also have had my Body Control separated from the Junction Fuse/Box and will again while getting myself a few features I wish for like anytime windshield/washer and mirror control. These vehicles have so many connections between modules it is hard to keep track of everything. I was sort of hoping you might have gotten another unused Junction Fuse/Box I could talk you out of. I'm looking for a non-functional one to explore with. I bought a BCM/Fuse Box for my last full-time vehicle, and it was instrumental in understanding the vehicle once I identified the chips and output functions. I believe once you get the BCM programmed all will be fine. I too will be looking into Tech Stream.

Techstream is garbage, but a necessary evil these days. I say garbage because it's slow and dated. It does actually provide some usefulness from time to time though.

For about a half day, I was actively looking to the salvage yards down in LA and up in San Fran and had trouble sourcing the ECU because I was referencing the part number on the side of the actual unit. I never tried after verifying the correct number through Sparks and backed up by a visit to my local Stealership...who was absolutely brutal in pricing. In doing all that, I came across lots of complete Junction Box units listed exclusively as "Fuse Box" and a few other non-specific descriptions. eBay as well. Since you're going experimental, I wouldn't think twice about going that route. I decided that was probably not a good way to cheap out on the ECU, though. I was very lucky , with the help from this site's Samaritan, to identify and go after the parts at Spark for a very substantial discount and the ECU from Ellis using a lead from this site saving over $100 off THE SALE price on the ECU.

I got out of this...well...almost, for about HALF of what the dealer wanted just for "Tear Down" and "Diagnostics". I would have been somewhere around $3000 if I just let the dealer run with it.

    Expensive Dome Light, eh? o_O

Quick little update now we know what needs to be done. I had an idea to go see 2 different Toyota specialists in my area. They are independent shops. The first, that used to work for the second shop for 10 years, didn't mess with it but that was second hand from a gal at the desk. I couldn't connect with Joe at the moment. I hit the second and he confirmed that they use TechStream but couldn't do the registration because he does so few, maybe a couple-a-few per year, he can't afford the State certifications for the locksmith requirements, bonding, and some other high dollar aspects this miserable-assed state of California requires of him to do this work. 30 years in my own business here and now done with it, I could feel his pain. He said only the dealers are able to keep up on it so it's back to the dealer I go. I'll be going by tomorrow a.m. to see how much Vaseline I'm gonna need to get this handled.

How did this all work out? What did the dealer set you back by? I have since gotten Tech Stream up and running, mostly, and can see where this would be programmed.

Sorry to revive this old thread, @op, but I am having this same issue and my replacement MBECU will be here tomorrow. Did you have to have it programmed to the truck or did it just work on a plug and play?

    Thank you!

It will be necessary to have the dealer do the programming. It requires Techstream software and at least here in Kalifornistan, the tech must be licensed as a Locksmith or similar credentials. I went to a great Toyota shop that had Techstream and the knowledge to easily do it but he told me they didn't have the state licensing required and it costs way to much to pay the state fees only to have a couple jobs a year to do this. The dealers are the only shops that can afford the service.

It cost me just under $400 to do it but it was handled and everything was back to normal afterwards. Feel free to ask any more questions if need be.
