I had an interesting problem with our 2013 Tacoma which we purchased a couple months ago, and I'm wondering if anyone else has seen this. When I got the truck, it only had one key and one remote fob. I had the dealer make two new keys from the original and another fob. I drove it home using the original key, but after I tried the new keys (both worked) the original key stopped working. It fits normally in the starter, and doesn't appear to be worn, but it simply will not turn anymore, no matter how much I try wiggling and tweaking it. As I said, the other two keys are fine, but I'm wondering what happened to the original. Any thoughts?
    Cheers,

Be happy, you have two keys that work! My used car came with three keys and they're all iffy! But, try shooting in some graphite powder and see if that helps. Otherwise... professional explanation:

Originally key probably worn down some, ignition cylinder pins may have gummed up/wore out little bit to kind of match the key. When you used a new fresh key it pushed the cylinder pins all the way to the correct position and now that they move more the old worn down key doesn't push them far enough to clear the lock.
Hard to describe if you don't know how the internal lock cylinder is set up.
Best bet would be to squeeze some dry graphite power into the lock and turn it back and forth to lubricate the internals.
Most any auto part stores should have little tubes of the dry graphite power you can buy.

Thanks for the ideas. I was trying to come up with a logical explanation (other than Gremlins :) )

This exact situation stranded me in a mall parking lot. There was a Toyota dealer who cut me a new chipless key from the VIN. Still didn't work... Turn the key and hit the end of the key, bingo! Thanks YouTube... Also found a vid on removing the ignition cylinder.
Took that with the key code from the dealer to a locksmith. Rebuilt for 35 bucks. I used a screwdriver to start the truck , while holding the fob next to that ring that was around the ignition cylinder.
What a fun little vacation side adventure.

Same ignition switch. I actually drove it home from the dealer with the original key. I also checked the drivers side door, and the old key and new keys work.
