Hi, everyone. I have had this issue going on for nearly a year now. My key is stuck in my ignition and will RARELY ever come out. I took it to some mechanics to check it out.

The mechanics spotted the problem. There is a piece underneath my steering wheel that needs to be replaced to tell the truck that it is in park, and therefor allow me to remove the key. I'm not sure what that part is or what it looks like.

The mechanic attempted to find the needed part online, with no success.

I should note that I cannot turn the key all the way to the left to remove it. It is stuck in ACC and refuses to let my key be removed. Sometimes, if I'm extremely lucky, I can take it right out. Unfortunately, my battery keeps dying as a result of this.

Thank you guys, hopefully we can find a solution.

Can you try taking a picture of the item you're looking to replace? Perhaps something with the steering lock?

Will it Key remove if the battery is disconnected?

Have you tried adjusting the park linkage ?
Does the truck start in the " N " position ?
Do all the gear positions align with the shifter bezel ?

I bet this is the issue. After my frame was replaced by Toyota, I had this exact issue before leaving the parking lot.

Automatic transmission? Check the plastic bushings that the gear shifter and linkages pivot on. My father had this issue and this fixed it when he replaced them (they had completely disintegrated). If there is much play in the shifter then they need to be replaced. Should be 4 bushings but they are pretty cheap from the dealer. Hope you get it figured out.

Yes, once the battery dies or is disconnected the key will come out with no issues.

I had the exact same problem. Tho when I hooked back up the battery the alarm would go off and I would be unable to start it without pushing in and out the red LED for the alarm for about 10-15 min. It was what TacosConQueso said. The shifter bushings had disintegrated. Had a shop replace them and it has not failed since. Also disconnected the RS 3000 alarm so it would not go nutz when I replaced a battery.

If you go to replace the bushings, I just purchased 4 from the dealership. They're like $3 each. Here is what they look like, and part number is 9038511003. There is a YouTube video posted in a similar thread about replacing bushings due to loose auto shifter (common problem for 1st gen after a while).
