    Switch may be worn out.

But before the pain of replacement, uncover it and give it a good cleaning

Thinking the switch is not getting in the off position for some reason.

Filled with dirt, worn out or broken.

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
It has been so long it is muscle memory .

Do you need to push the key towards the lock cylinder to turn to off.

There is a lock switch when you remove the battery terminal the switch opens and things will move.

Always better to remove the negative terminal no sparks !

doesn’t appear to have to be pushed where would the lock switch be located?

it is behind the lock cylinder .
If it will not move inward then a good cleaning is in order .

You do know how to remove the lock cylinder once all the plastic trim is removed .

The ignition switch in accessory there is a pin that needs pushed in. I use a small pin punch.

Then the lock cylinder can be pulled out .

    Good luck

just a update my 2000 you need to push the key toward the lock cylinder before it will move to the off position allowing the key to be removed .

The whole cylinder moves not just the key.

If it comes out with the battery unhooked you most likely have a problem with the switch on the shifter that tells the Shift Lock Control ECU it's in park so it releases the Key Interlock Solenoid or the bushings in the shifter are worn out and it's not depressing the switch.

I was having the same problem last year. After putting my truck into Park my key would not move past ACC and would not release from ignition cylinder.... I had to disconnected the battery in order to pull my key out. Frustrating!!! So, I pulled my entire gear lever assembly out and replaced all four bushings.... works perfectly now.

It could also just be not fully going into Park.. could just need a tiny adjustment on the lever under the truck. I briefly had the same problem after tranny swap and this is why.
