Agree with others; this is a mechanical problem and a locksmith should be contacted. The 'barrel'
should be resettable (re-keyed) with pins to match your existing keys. This is assuming the barrel is at fault instead of the key just being worn out.
So, agree to try your backup key. The key ur using may be too worn to work.
If you need a new key, you'll need a master key for the system to recognize if you want Toyota to sell you a blank and cut/program it into the truck computer. If your 'spare' key is a valet key, the chip system in the truck won't be able to accept an additional key programmed into the system.
Another way to get a new key is to get the old one 'cloned' which can be done at Ace Hardware as I understand. In this the tech copies and burns in the information from the transponder into a replacement key transponder which then will be recognized. If your old key can be used to cut the metal shaft properly you're back in business.

Well good news, i tried my other key and it worked perfectly!
Ill upload a picture later of the two keys... its crazy how worn the other key was!
They told me i should probably get a new key made, better to have two, and incase the problem happens again.
Apparently i can just go to the dealer and give them the serial number and theyll make me a new key for around 40-50$

    Your profile says pre runner.

    I have a base.

    Is your profile incorrect?

a pre runner is a very different vehicle than a base in many ways.

Lets start with wheels. I have 5 lugs. You have 6. I have black bumpers front and rear, and a all black grill. I sit much lower to the ground than you, as you have a different suspension. Along with many other differences. And you have a chipped key, I don't

All in the eye of the beholder. I see low TCO while doing everything I want it to do. Perfect for what I need. Hauls kayaks and bicycles quite well, is cheap to maintain, and gets a consistent 20mpg in town (AC on) and pushes 30 on the road. Couldn't be happier.

Well, I'd be happier with no TPMS. One day it will be properly disabled.

I get a kick out of those base models, they look so small sitting on those little tires. Ha

4cyl never has chipped key regardless of trim package.
V6 always has chipped key regardless of trim package.

So it is entirely down to which engine you have.
