A couple years ago I ran my 2018 SR5 key thru the damn washer. I dried it out good and it worked, but I put it in my safe and used the other key.

Got a call from hospice at 1:00 today saying my dad died at 12:50 I needed to do some laundry for the trip to Ohio. In my fucked up state of mind I washed the other fucking key.

Dried it out, and they both work fine except neither of the panic buttons work. I think I asked the service department once if they could shut that shit off. I'd hate to be somewhere in the middle of a 900 mile trip and the horn start blowing nonstop if the panic button is messed up.

    Thoughts?

Sorry about your pops. So, you washed both keys and both still work. The panic doesn't work and you may have had it disabled previously, but you are worried about it working randomly? I don't understand your reservations. Even if the panic did start going off your can just put the key in and start it. I should Add that I don't think the panic function can operate while the vehicle is running. No "little miss sunshine" road trip horn for you.

Sorry about your dad, my condolences to your family. My dad is 98, and ill which doesn't look good. We can only take a day at a time.
As far as the keys. A couple months ago my wife threw my pants in the laundry with the keys still in the pocket, and wash them, then put them in the dryer for an hr. When i found all this out, i figured they were tapioca, but trying them? their still working normal till this day.

    Condolences about your dad.

I have washed my key fob twice. It is pretty well sealed and hasn't been an issue for me for 3 years.

I'm praying for you and your family.

I don't know about the key. All I can say is have a backup plan for whatever worries you about it. If it's the horn, have an idea how to disconnect it. If it's starting the truck, figure out the back up key. Just have a plan and until you have to go to that back up plan, you should be fine...

Sorry for your loss, I know it's got to be tough. Hang in there.

Maybe your key isn't all dried out yet. See if you can put it in a zip lock bag with some rice or some kind of drying agent over night. That might help pull out moisture.

Accidents happen. I can't count how many times I washed the TiVo remote from the bedroom with the blankets. It always works again again after a day or two to dry out. Same with those USB drives. Those get washed with pants several times.

Get the fuck out of here with that, Bob. OP just lost his father — I lost mine as well earlier this year, if you haven’t experienced the same then just have some class and keep it moving.

Condolences to you, @wood714 . Take care of yourself and your family in these times and try not to worry about your keys, that’s an easy fix if ever needed.

Let me clarify: Yeah, maybe that was a little harsh on the feels chief. Over the last year I've lost two family members and a close friend and been primarily responsible for the clean-up, and support of friends and family. Time to be focused. So forgive me if I don't give a shit about keys in the laundry. I do feel for the OP and apologize how that came off.

Back in the day if my R/C stuff took a swim, i've cleaned electronics with 90% rubbing alcohol after removing the batteries and they came back to life.

Well. one day when i was fishing in a trout stream here, my cell phone decided to take a swim. I retrieved it in seconds, but it was too late the battery shorted completely burning up inside the phone destroying it. You could just feel the heat coming out of what was left.

Ahh it's really from being in a hurry to get things done that checking stuff is forgotten. But Im an adult about it. If I ruin something I own up to it and blame myself and I'm the one to repair or replace so it's on me.
