Keys: Learned something new

Locked my keys in the truck while cleaning the inside. It was parked in my garage when it happened. I went to the junk drawer looking for a spare. I found one to my 01 double cab I got rid of a year ago. Figured what the heck and went and tried it.

Bam! It opens the drivers side door. I try it in the ignition and it wouldn't budge.

Is this a common thing? The owner of my previous truck can get inside my truck with his key. Not that I'm worried, just surprised.

 

There are only so many key cuts on a key possible. I believe there are 7 cuts.
Not sure.
So there are
544320 possibilities.
So with transponder chips. If they could get in the transponder would stop it.
There is somewhere a person can get in my truck. But with immobilizer it won't start.
Years ago without transponders they had your vehicle.

Been a long time since I coded locks but they don't use all the cuts for the doors back when.
So yes they could get in but not get it started .

 

Ahhhh I see. Glad to know. That makes sense about only so many patterns. At least they can't drive it away

 

Yep. Both keys are just plain old fashioned metal key.

To be honest that would not surprise me either.

I use to have about 20 Chrysler keys on a ring way back when and when the young kids locked the doors in the shop i had a pretty good chance of getting it open.
how times have changed.

 

My brother liked a friends truck that lived in North Carolina so he bought one here in California then while on a job he was able to unlock the door and then start the engine of Eds truck, talk about coincidence.

 

Hehehehehe.
Years ago things were not so concerning about things like this.

 

This is true but Ed thought he was losing his mind on that job because we would move it a little or face it another direction.

 

Found the same thing when my sister locked her keys in her camry. My brother's corolla key opened the door right up.

 

Now that is funny...
