Seems unlikely, but does anyone have a 255/85/16 around 1/2 tread to use as a spare? I don't know anyone else in this thread running them. I want to go to 285 real directly, so really don't care to spend much money.

I run them, unfortunately I don't have any spare. You can get a maxxis bighorn from 4wheel parts for like 190.

    Thinking caps on my friends...

1st gen. Tacoma, "Load Sensing and Proportioning By-Pass Valve". Its a part of the brake system in the rear, attached to the driver side frame under the bed, and has a load sensing "spring" that attaches to the axle.

    LSP & BV removal diagram.jpg

    LSP & BV components diagram.jpg

Mine is rusty as ___ and I figured when I go and swap my bed out next month that I might as well repair/replace the thing when the bed is off and access is super easy. (Rather than wait till the rusty brake lines leading to the thing just blow and I'm going highway speed with less braking power.) Didn't pay mind to what this rusty doohicky even was until this morning when I sat down to look up a part number.

Anyone ever replace one of these? Anyone have a used one just sitting on a shelf they'd like to sell me on the cheap? How important is this doohicky if I would rather just choose to go redneck and bypass the entire rusty mess by connecting the incoming brake lines directly to the outbound lines to the rear brakes?

    Thanks!

There's a bunch of people on Marlin crawler's forums that run without it.

Looks like pros and cons, your choice.

Thanks for the link. I read through that, and I just spent some time reading other threads here on the boards that came up when I searched "LSP & BV". Note my system is not lifted. So it looks like 1.) bypassing the valve will make my rear brakes always engage (whereas they usually don't unless under load as controlled by the OE sensing system). Leads to potential downfalls of rear lockup under heavy braking, and replacing your rear brake shoes more frequently. Or 2.) simple aftermarket ($35) valve needs to be manually adjusted, so that I'd need to take a quick crawl under when I know the back is loaded (ex. firewood, towing the trailer, etc.) and allow the rear brakes to be engaged.

I'll think all that through till I get my bed off and see just how bad (or maybe not quite so bad) my parts are and make the decision then.

Meanwhile... please shout out if you've got a used LSP & BV to send my way!

I have a set of 4 285s, that i plan to pick up and I'd rather put the money towards them and find a spare(should be easier to locate), then buy a new one for a size i won't be running again. Appreciate the info though.

Why the change to 285s? I've had no problems with my 255s on anything stupid I've done.

My plan is to eventually run 35's, but re-gear, lockers, OBA are going to hold that up for a while. If i could find a spare for now, I would just run them until they are out. I don't want to buy new tires until i leap to 35's, so I'm just thinking 285 will be much easier to locate a set for cheap to get me through.

A popular modification is to remove the LSPV and add a manual valve. Might be something to consider. Also I will hopefully be removing mine this winter to do this swap, how much of a rush are you in to replace it? @testelle

Simply that its going to be SOOOO convenient to do it next month when I have the bed off. I'm going to do something then rather than the shenaniganz of crawling around barely being able to fit a wrench up in there while upside down with rust and crap falling all over my face, etc.

Makes me wish I would have made the decision to swap my bed out this past winter when I replaced my gas tank. Daggone that would have been easier with the bed off.

Almost done with yet another 12 hour day. Unfortunately this was 8 straight hours and 4 overtime hours.

We're ripping out a hand throw switch and replacing with an electric one, getting new rails and ties, and that grey box I posted a pic of last night. These pictures and video are when they weld the rails together.
