True! Does anyone else notice that their trucks seem to run a little better when the ambient air is below 20 degrees? Don't get me wrong, it isn't life changing, but i definitely run through the gears quicker, and pull hills better when below 20.

wish i could say the same. My DD is being used by the inlaws, their escape is getting a new motor at 45,000 miles. I have the same year and model. It was using coolant, but unsure where it was leaking. I'll be checking with each fuel up though.

Colder air = denser air. Particles closer together. Cold makes things contract. More air getting in the engine.

Perhaps? I've always noticed my vehicles run better in the cold and was offered this explanation once.

Indeed. In fact, this is the idea behind the intercooler for forced induction applications. When I had my '86 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe, I converted it from a charge-tube setup to a top-mount intercooler with higher volume injectors. The difference was like night and day... the car would actually have wheelspin in second gear after those modifications.

The basic idea: The cooler the air, the denser the charge, which means you can throw in more fuel to hit that stoichiometric ratio and you get more energy out of each combustion cycle.
I remember reading about guys tossing bags of ice onto their intake tubes and manifolds at the 1/4 mile track, and their times would actually improve a little from it.

That's right, I couldn't remember when I heard this. It was back when I was putting that turbo coupe engine into my ranger. I took the top mount and made it a front mount too. Never understood why they went with the top mounted one.

I knew cold air performed better. It is the idea behind a cold air intake right. I just didn't think it would make a noticeable difference in a stock motor. I have a couple hills on the commute that i usually have to grab 5th half way up, not this morning lost about 500 RPM going up it this morning.

That was a goofy design; the SVO Mustang had the same setup. I mean, the intercooler sat directly over the exhaust manifold, so you would heat-soak the thing at red lights. It made for an awesome looking engine bay, though!

My 19' Pro with the DAI runs smoother than my 17' Sport. Especially now. I don't hear the fuel injectors as much now either.
