Let’s be real here, the flu kills more people than the caronavirus. The media just wants to scare people

Not to start an argument but a typical flu season sees something like a 0.1% mortality rate. By any measure, COVID-19 has that beat. So, whether or not COVID-19 kills more people in total than the flu is going to be a matter of how widely it spreads.

I sure hope you turn out to be right. In the meantime folks, wash your hands, cover your coughs and sneezes, try not to pick your nose. ;) "It can't hurt!"

Not arguing, more of the "I know, right!?" thing.

In general it almost seems that people and media feel more comfortable with flu. Maybe because it's been around for a long time, there are vaccines* against it, and a lot of people had flu at some point.
Also, because this thing is so new, I have a feeling that death toll is going to rise significantly as time progresses

Covid19 kills almost 3% of infected. The flu kills less than 1% of infected.

Covid19 spreads easily prior to debilitating symptoms occuring, which makes it much more easily transmissible than the flu, which only spreads after the onset of symptoms.

There are several treatments for the flu: tamiflu etc, and there is a vaccine for the flu. There are neither of these things for Covid19.

"Oh, but Covid19 is really only dangerous if you have pre-existing conditions!"

Look, like 50% of the country is overweight, has high blood pressure, or smokes.

I'm not saying go buy 6 months of food and avoid people for 6 months, but when the experts say this is much more dangerous than the flu, you should probably listen to the experts.

Remember back in school when you thought 97% was a great grade? Amazing how 3% can be scary when death is on the line. Pass around a proverbial pistol playing Russian roulette, knowing 3% of the time you're dead. Understandable people are nervous.

But, alas... wash hands all the time (hand sanitizer is not as good), and don't touch your mouth and face and especially don't pick your nose (all unless you just washed your hands). Learning not to touch your face fifty million times a day is a hard skill. It is so innate in what we do with all kinds of unconscious behaviors, neurotic behaviors, and gestures. We're talking like sitting here typing at the computer don't prop your head in your hands with your elbows up or take your glasses off and rub your sleepy eyes, don't go to the store and realize you need a 3rd hand and put something in your mouth to hold while you juggle with the keys, etc.

When I took Microbiology classes in college, and surgical technique classes in vet school... you became very aware of just how easy it is to touch contaminated things mindlessly. But when you are sterile scrubbed into surgery and your nose itches... you're SOL.

And if you're worried you'll be in the 3%, maybe just make things right with the Man upstairs now that way things are good if you get the short straw.

And once you’re scrubbed in for surgery, your nose will ALWAYS have an itch haha.

I’m fine seeing all the scare about COVID in the news and listening to people talk about it but I really just hate the ignorance the general public has towards the flu. I think the general notion is the flu is benign, we have a vaccine (that the majority of patients never get) so it can’t be a serious illness. Most people know somebody who has the flu and does fine, etc, etc. People don’t see the babies needing a breathing tube or the grandparents dying from the flu. An epidemiologist recently said we should just change the name of the flu every year to something unique/“scary” and people might take it seriously haha.

Tamiflu shortens duration of symptoms, doesn’t get rid of or cure the flu. I’ve heard some patients with confirmed COVID are being treated with high doses of anti-viral medications which is interesting.

Windy today. Driving and I suddenly hear a knock on the right, bottom of the truck. Became more severe as the wind picked up. Found my right front mud flap cracked almost all the way across at the body line. Going to epoxy and reinforce with steel strap for now. Anyone have a pair of fronts for 2007 that are hiding in their garage? Message me.
