Shit man, didn't know it was that bad.

 

That's the cheapest I've found MD dealerships want over $730

 

They are trying to warranty it out which is what I'm really hoping happens because I'd rather buy one and get one replaced under warranty than have to buy two of them at 635 each

 

I want a spare so I'm never left stranded again. I bought two brand new Yellow Top Optima Batteries as well

 

Learn how to rebuild the alternator and just get yourself a replacement control module and brushes. Mine shit itself in Wharton a couple years back and all I did was take it apart, clean it out real good, and let it dry overnight. Good as new in the morning and still running to this day. After that I got the aforementioned parts for about $60 total as backup (that's for a 1st gen but I imagine it would be similar). Other than the ECU and brushes an alternator is basically just a hunk of wire and magnets, nothing that typically goes bad except maybe the bearings but those should be sealed up good.

Same thing for a starter. Get yourself a replacement solenoid and contacts, cost me about $40 for those.

My buddy has a body shop just north of Butler where we are restoring my VW.

 

Yea I was looking for a rebuild kit and no one sold those either if they can't warranty it out I'm going to ask for the old one back and try to rebuild it. If they can warranty it then I won't be able to get the old one back and will just have to buy one new. That's a great idea for the starter too, mine is also a manual transmission so I can pop the clutch hopefully in most situations.

Lol we had a fourth truck that was a silver first Gen at the whale back but I guess we took to long for them cause he bailed on us.

 

I wasn't able to find rebuild kits, or if I did they were almost as much as a new one. I just bought the individual pieces on eBay or Amazon. Get the part number for your starter and alternator then search for that.

Great news everybody, the truck was able to be fixed under warranty and I was able to score a use alternator on eBay with only 56k miles on it for $115.

 

If the used one doesn't work I have one to learn how to rebuild before my next trip to Shamokin
