Fuel oil is creeping its way up as well. Unfortunately for me the new place uses more oil being a bigger house and it's my method of heating domestic water... :annoyed:

If you have a means to haul it off road diesel is cheaper. I put 2 drums in the F-250 and have a small electric pump, not fun but functional.

    Kerosene is $3.99/gal here.

Damn Rusty, you're a pretty frugal/resourceful guy  However, I'll pay for the convenience of not loading up the truck and going a town over. I'll do it for the forced air heater to use in the upcoming garage, but not my furnace. That and if I get a bad batch of fuel, I know who to point fingers at...

Living up in the back corner of beyond will teach one a thing or two -- that and poor and resourceful go hand in hand...

Oh, I totally get that! If the need ever arrives I know that offroad diesel is basically fuel oil. Hell the place I can get it from even markets it as such.

I have lived many of years not making much money, even working 55 hours. While not "rich" now, I've finally gotten to a point in my life where I'm comfortable. The purchase of the house has made me hunker down a little bit, but careful spending is key. That and now I no longer have to deal with a water/sewer bill and I can take my trash to the township building every Saturday morning before work for free (that saves $80 a quarter in itself!).

Heating domestic water isn't all that expensive during the winter, you are running the boiler anyway. Summer is another story.
When you upgrade your electric service maybe you should put an electric water heater in for the summer.

The water can go through your existing tankless coil and then to the water heater, so in the winter very little electric would be used.

Amen brother, I too lived many years working lots of hours for little money, the economy habits stick with you even after you move up the pay scale. :) I don't think that is a bad thing.

I have worked with plenty of guys who were chronically short of money even when making a good wage, they just never seemed to get the idea of spending less than they made each week. :notsure:

That's the plan once I get a 200 amp service. I will more than likely abandon the tankless coil in the boiler though. It really needs a tempering valve, as the water is WAY too damn hot. Easier just to plumb the thing out of the loop. Also changing out the boiler aquastat for a more modern unit that doesn't keep the boiler running constantly and only runs as needed....

I still am frugal with lots of things. Hell, my old shoes were pretty damn ragged, but still were ok to wear. I was pretty much forced into getting another pair. Wasn't there a Kinks song about that? Low Budget I think

i use the offroad diesel in my truck, the kubota, and the heater out back. Got a large truck stop type fueling station a mile down the road. I pay enough taxes for other things, I save where I can.

Any idea how to haul it? I have a buddy with 150 gallons in a newly abandoned tank. If I can figure out how to haul it for less than $500 it'll be more cost effective than getting a delivery!

55 gallon drums in the back of a truck works for me. Keep in mind the weight, kerosene is 6.8 pounds per gallon, #2 heating oil weighs 8.2 pounds per gallon.

You can get a rotary pump like below for around $60, cast iron ones might be better built.

    Good morning fellow Pennsyltuckyvanians!

Yesterday's warmer temps made it possible to get the majority of the ice off the driveway - only another 350 ft to clear.

Stay safe! And warm. We use propane to run the boiler for our radiant heat system, the water heater and for the cook top. There's a 1000 gal tank buried in the yard - those prices are creeping up, too.

you are right. They do check on occasion. My fuel filter is not clear and with the delta in price to offroad diesel I did the math and it’s worth the chance.
