J&L is long gone. There's a tech center for Pitt and CMU there now. My great uncle worked in that mill for years. The Homestead Works is long gone too. My father and another great uncle worked at a smaller steel mill in W. Homestead, that is gone too. But the Cracker plant is in Potter Township, Beaver County, on the Ohio River, just across from the town of Beaver. It's right off I376, which you can see in the one photo (note the blue bridge that spans the Ohio).

That section of I 376 was also not finished what threw me off thinking it was much closer to down town

 

This portion was called state route 60 until a few years ago when they reorganized the interstate system in this part of the state. The old J&L mill was on the Monongahela River, as was the Homestead Works. The Mon meets the Allegheny at the Point and forms the Ohio, which then travels west.

 

I was able to figure that out after having to look at a map The old Beaver valley highway .

Going back to the early eighties off the top of my head.

The plant has it own power system up on the hill, large enough to feed this monstrosity and then have some to sell back to DLC.

 

Buddy of mine , journeyman just pulled off that job. He said a 8 hr day is a 12 hr day for him. So many people there. Multiple parking lots.. he would trave apx an hr to 1 parking lot then 20 to 30 shuttle ride to job site , then same after work then 15 to 20 waiting to exit the parking lot. He was working for Sargent Electric, they had the multi million dollar heat trace contract. At least he had fu employment for over a year.

 

It think they had 7500 working here at its peak. They created various lots to transport workers by bus. I don't believe any were an hour away, maybe a 1/2 hour. You do not want to be traveling down Rt. 18 when there is a shift change. There are police doing traffic control and the workers are in a hurry to get out. On a road where there is never any traffic delays, other than lights, you could be delayed 20 or 25 minutes. Not good when you have some kind of appointment and left at the wrong time.

Yep was pretty nice the past few days during our false spring, our oldest pupper turned 6 yesterday so took him for a nice 3 mile hike at french creek today, he was the most bestest dog on the trails being friendly with everyone that walked by.

 

Did +24 miles on the OneWheel today.

my legs and feet are pretty sore.

 

I would’ve pushed their car back into the street. What gives them the right to pull into somebody else’s driveway?

Damn squirrel got out of the cage in our heater in the shop at work.

Luckily we had a 70000 btu torpedo heater in the parts shed for some reason.

 

Gotta love the forecast of a dusting to an inch magically becoming 3-6 overnight. Yesterday the snow piles were nearly gone and woke up to a winter wonderland.....SMH
