Did u tour with one of the historians? I over heard a couple of them on our self guided tour and they really know there details.

 

Well on my way home from work. And rear tire blew out on the parkway. And the the trucks scissor jack don't lift the rear of the truck high enough to get the tire off. Smh. Thank God I got a friend that lives close to where I'm at at. And he's coming out to give me a hand with a real car jack.

 

Yes. Well worth it for the details you can't read about on some of the monuments. Also, the description of Pickets Charge gave me goosebumps. Amazing history for sure.

 

Dang. Where is that block of wood when u need it.

 

I’m not near Allegheny. The only off-roading I do is for cutting firewood or hunting .

 

I have been camping up in Allegheny NF and was less then impressed. Lots of oil pumps and the smell of crude in the air once in a while. IMO, Bald Eagle and other stuff in the center of the state is way better.

Good morning all!

I'm about one hour from Gettysburg and been there more times than I can count. Sadly most of those times were years ago and before I had a real appreciation of history. Recent trips through the area have been so overcrowded I couldn't enjoy it. One area of PA that has had my interest is Johnstown and the story of the flood.

Would really like a recommendation as we are considering camping in cooks forest or allegheny NF but it sounds like central PA is the way to go?

Also - any tips for camping in bear country? Triangle campsite setup, and hang garbage is what I hear.

 

I have mostly been on the east side of Bald Eagle. I hear Tioga is good as well. The only PITA about the state forests is they have a registration/reservation system where the national forests do not.

When I left Allegheny I stopped at the Kinzua sky bridge, which I believe is in a state park of the same name. It seemed like a nicer area then Allegheny, but I probably need to give Allegheny another try. So far, Bald Eagle is one of my favorite spots on the east coast.

As far as bears, just police your food and trash every night. I have never hung stuff up, but just put everything inside my truck. I have wound up pretty close to a few black bears and never had an issue. Just leave them be and if you see cubs, look around you for mama (don't seek her out, just be aware of your surroundings) and go in the opposite direction. I don't know this first hand, but the lore is that brown bears may approach you out of curiosity, but a black bear will only approach to kill you. They are apparently more shy, so if they come at you, something is wrong.
