40cal arc is significantly more energetic than a .40cal.

Yea an arc flash like that ain't nothing to play with...

I rarely like to dabble in the switch gear at work, but will have to go into a control panel live to change something out like a VFD or contactor.

Great video, wish all electricians/maintainance/HVAC people can see this. Gives u more respect. How many times we "just turn it on" . You never know. Better safe than sorry.

Yup every time I turn on a 3ph breaker (even the small ones) in a panel after a part change out I make sure nobody is within the specified flash radius. I have told someone on more than one occasion "get the "F" back!" Powering down a whole panel is not viable in lots of cases in my job, especially when the building is running. Only more experienced techs are allowed to do it. Tech 1's are typically only to be on standby, 2's can if they've proven themselves. I'm a 3 so naturally I'm the go to along with the other top tech 4 on my shift.

    Thanks for sharing!

For sure! I have a ton of respect for electricians. I was fortunate to experience residential work briefly over 20 years ago; it taught me a ton and gave me the respect needed when working with all electricity.

How well labeled are your panels? We actually had Bradley go through and math out all of ours which give the required PPE for live work and safe approach radius. Like, we have 12470 panels with lower cal ratings than a couple of 120v panels.

    This is my favorite:

nah...good socks...mildly insulated boots...fleece lined pants...my parka and a merino wool beanie. I covered ground at a pace of 1 mile every 45 minutes, so I didn't overheat.

Dave, you’re a better man than me. Used to be I would love to do this but I can’t take the cold like I once could even bundled as you were.
Love to see some spring shots of this
    Have a good one.

    Great video!

Many years ago when I was just starting out in industry I watched an electrician around 55 - 60 reset a substation breaker. The substations were original to the building (1952) I discovered later, each breaker was about the size of a dorm refrigerator with a handle about 18" long on the front.

The handle loaded up a spring when you pushed them (hard) to the reset position - clank, clank, clank and then engaged with a heavy spring driven ka-clunk when moved to the on position.

From a distance I watch the fellow reset it, look around and then flatten himself against the substation unit stretching his arm to get his body as far away from the lever as possible. He tucked his head down and pulled the lever - PPE was his bifocals and a pair of leather work gloves.

I didn't know just what he was doing at that point in my young life but it was clear he really didn't want to pull that handle. My first day off I was at the library (it was a big building with books ;)) to learn why.

All these years later even if it is just a 120 volt 15 amp breaker I still think of him every time I approach a panel.

So went to my sister's house yesterday for Xmas dinner I pulled up around 2pm. Sister and brother inlaw come out saying someone stole the 13lb prime rib out of my father back seat as he was walking food into the house. So we ended only having ham. And sides.
I can't believe someone actually stole a whole damn prime rib out of the car. Why not just take the car too pops left the car running in the street.
