No, just my furnace. I had an oil furnace until about 5 or 6 years ago. I only converted the furnace to propane. The rest are still electric. As to why 400 is the fill on a 500 gallon tank, I was told because it is a gas, so they have to leave room for it to expand, if it heats, lest it blow.

True that. I have the same and you can only fill to 80% due to expansion. I changed my whole house to propane when we moved in, out went the electric dryer and stove.
not sure what you are using in the house but I ran down from 80 to 50 in a little over 5 months, keep the heat at 67 and have the generator testing once a week..propane obviously as well.
Granted, it’s just me and the wife but seems like you used a good bit in a short time.

 

I have thought about changing over the hot water heater when it goes. We have a cooktop, set in a beautiful oak cabinet. Not sure if they make a gas cooktop. As for the furnace, I filled it in early November. We keep out house at 68 or 69 and we are at 40. However, I do have a propane fireplace in our addition and I have always wondered how much that pilot uses, constantly burning, regardless of its use. the alternative isn't appealing though, which is to light it every time. That's the nice thing about a propane fireplace: the convenience. Our house is about 2100 square feet, 1 1/2 stories and not well insulated.

You just said it…insulation. I’m not far from what you have, about 2600 sf, two story built in 99 and insulated. Even though our basement is only half done, I went around one winter and felt in the rafters for any cold air and added more insulation where I could feel air.
You ever gauge how you use propane in the summer? It could tell you right there.

I did not know that! Is propane cheaper than oil? When my parents bought a new house in 2015, one of the reasons they decided against buying in a particular neighborhood is because it had propane instead of natural gas; I don't think any brand new houses with oil heat are getting built here anymore.

 

Propane is much cheaper than oil. Out here, there are no natural gas lines, so that is not even an option. Neighborhoods that are plans will have gas lines. It's called economy of scale. Scattered houses in rural areas won't. In my township there are at least 2 or 3 new houses built each year, most of which do not have access to natural gas lines.

 

Our house was built in 1961 by a guy who worked at the local steel mill. They say he used some scrap. LOL. Our basement is huge. It covers the entire area of the house, which is probably 40 x 42 feet. There are cold pockets, including an old coal cellar. My wife and I have tried to insulate over the years, but there must be some we missed because an occasional field mouse gets in. As for the summer, the propane furnace is off and I usually turn off the pilot on the fireplace, although least summer I didn't. The fireplace is 22 years old and it can be a bitch to relight in the Fall. I imagine it's costing me a few gallons if I leave the pilot on.
