Perhaps it did come off wrong, but it was a really unhelpful response never the less. My icom 5100 is installed in my truck, and I've already listened. No one follows protocols. NO ONE. Its like they're talking on a cell phone. Ham is changing, and now I'm being told, "Ham is great, when youre all license get a DMR radio". There is more to know for receiving a HAM license, than a concealed carry card.

 

I was on there for a long time. Mostly guns/knives/tools/trucks. Became a distraction.

 

coulda fooled me. all i'm saying it the book sucks. the closet club to me is philmont, but the vast majority of those guys are old. i don't fit the typically mold of a HAM. I'm heavily tattooed with a giant beard. I don't think those guys would go out of their way to help me.

 

well ham is a different story, most clubs won't let you in until you are licensed.

 

I am about the same distance as you are. The 120 miles from Jersey to my house in PA I am doing the day before.

I was trying to be very helpful. I've been through the process , went to ham club meetings , Listened , Learned etc.
Ham is Boring , most people into ham radio are real electronic geeks (I'm not ), so how are you going to relate , start a conversation , follow the rules , etiquette or whatever if you only know "answers" ?
I've had my license for awhile now , I don't listen to it or even use it much because it's boring. The arrl book was much less Boring than the radio itself.
I have it for emergencies in remote places. Even that may prove to be useless ?
So , for your future reference .... don't ask questions .... Oh , BTW , GUFY

I'm leaving the 30th driving 5 hours hitting a hotel then finishing the other five hours the 31st should be there by 3 -4

Just registered. For an arrival day/time, I put down Thursday, August 31st at 7PM. I figure I'll wake up early and hit the road before sunrise. Got that @Braves95?
