Sounds like both incidents ended without accidents! Working as intended!

Joking aside maybe BMW's data shows that the number one cause of highway accidents involving steering is an over correction causing oversteer? Just speculation. I do think vehicle fatalities are going up, could be because of more nanny tech making people feel safer than they are. Based on my observations I think it's distracted driving.

I’ve driven several different vehicles with the LKA, most of the others would just nudge the wheel then disengage when it senses torque input. The BMW just takes too long to surrender control.

Utter bullshit. Accidents are occurring because people don’t drive with two hands on the wheel, and paying attention.

And thus, I wish every oncoming vehicle had Lane Assist. If someone comes across into my lane and kills me, I'm gonna be pissed.

I actually like this collision detection. Saves me from running into my furnace. :)

Lane assist won't prevent that from happening it can still happen. It's not like any vehicle saftey system can prevent a vehicle from entering the highway and proceeding the wrong way.

Interesting that some of you are having trouble with lane assist. I've had a car (from a different brand) with it for six years and driven a few others with it. I've never really felt like it was more than a little annoying most of the time. My only complaint is that it tends to be a little too rigid about where it wants the car placed in the lane. I tried it out when I test drove a 4G Tacoma. I didn't find it to be any different. It may be that I'm simply used to how it behaves, but I can't say as I feel like it ever felt overbearing or anything even approaching that.

If you keep your foot on the brake when this happens then hit the “back” button on the steering wheel you can continue past the point where it wants to let you go. I have to do this every time when backing into my garage so that I can get the inch or two away from the wall I need.

I was backing up my friend's Ram on Saturday, I stopped opened the door to ask him something, then hit the gas again to continue backing up. The engine revved, but didn't more at all. It had thrown the truck in P, with the R now flashing, and put the e-brake on. I had to push the brake, shift to P, back to R, and release the e-brake before I could backup again. Just because I opened a freaken door. That's bad.

I'm glad I have a base OR MT, a lot of those safety things are not there because it just wouldn't work with an MT.

We lost a family member in an accident not his fault but one where he'd be here if all the vehicles involved had the safety systems shipping now. These systems started shipping in numbers in 2012. Now with so much data all of the auto makers, insurers and regulators know it really does mean fewer injuries, saved lives and repair costs worth it.

I’m not altogether against the nanny features but you nailed it here. At first they (ideally) assist good drivers. Over time complacency is a risk. Can’t understand shifting, can’t park, can’t hold a lane, can’t think a step or two ahead, can’t be bothered to pay attention and stay off their phones.

Some nanny or generally automatic features are great, like fuel injection. I’ve never had to adjust a carb heading into altitude. But the car is becoming the driver instead of assisting the driver and it’s scary.

You're not wrong there, at least in the case of these partial systems. It's the biggest reason I'm categorically against systems like SuperCruise, and Autopilot or Full Self Drive. They take away everything that actually could hold the driver's attention, effectively actively disincentivizing them from being involved in the process, but still require the driver to be alert and ready to take over at a fraction of a second's notice. Even worse, they assign legal liability to that driver — who is effectively a passenger — in the event of a crash. I have no idea how we'll reach actual general case autonomous driving, especially given that all systems have to be developed incrementally, but this sure as hell ain't the way.
