Looking for options to add anti theft measures to my 2nd gen Tacoma 2.7l Base access cab. I leave my truck in obscure areas In the pnw to fish, hunt, dive, jog, surf etc. I don’t like leaving my Doberman in the truck for an hour while I’m surfing. I’m sure many of you are reluctant to post on the Internet what your security implementations are for obvious reasons, but any Intel is appreciated! Keep on rockin in the free world

There are many obscure & clever ways to prevent the truck from running, most people choose to break the fuel pump circuit with a hidden switch.

If you install a kill switch, don’t post on interweb forums where you put it.

Blow a fuse intentionally on the bench. When you get out, install it in a position that would prevent the truck from starting, or from running well. Take the good fuse with you.

Very unlikely that someone will take the time to troubleshoot a vehicle that won't start.

There are GPS trackers designed for the "buy here, pay here" car lots. They allow you to remotely disable the starter. But it's just a relay you can wire to whatever you want.

May not work if you are outside of cell reception, but they are surprisingly inexpensive. $125 device, $25 for the year.

or put a kill switch which is the point of one and what OP is asking to do.

if my truck had a fuse preventing starting I would grab any of the 50 other fuses right next to it from a non critical port and use it.

Pulling a relay or fuse like that is a recipe for losing or forgetting it.
Then jumping it with a paper clip to get home. Which I’ve done.

The city I live in, vehicles are constantly broken into, stolen, carjacked, vandalized. I’ve lost a couple to theft, and had a car stereo stolen. A couple things I’ve learned.

If you have a loud expensive sound system, turn it down when you get close to home. So people close to where you live don’t know you have it.

If you even remotely think you’re being followed, don’t go straight home. You can drive around in circles until they give up. If they don’t give up, drive up to the front of a police station or somewhere with lots of witnesses.

You want your vehicle to be more difficult to steal than most. So they’ll move on to something else. I see a plumbers truck. He must have had it stolen enough. So now I see it with a boot on a tire. The club isn’t really a deterrent, they’re defeated in about 20 seconds.

So, the first thing I do after I acquire a vehicle, before I even take it home, is bring it directly to my car alarm guy. He knows I’m coming because I call ahead, he knows I’ll pay, and he’ll wait for me even if it’s very late.

I had one alarm you had to start the engine, then hit a switch or after a bit or the siren would blow. If you still didn’t hit the switch the engine would stall. I mounted the switch so it wasn’t obvious I was reaching for it. I’d lean over to pull the seatbelt with my left hand and my right hand could reach the hidden switch at the same time. So if someone was watching, it wasn’t obvious I was reaching for something.

In your case, make it difficult and frustrating for someone to get it started. Like a multitude of hidden kill switches that have to be set at the perfect combination for it to start. They want the easy quick target. Surfing up there, I don’t know if you get the crowded lineup like in socal. If there’s other people around arriving to go out and coming in. Other activities when it’s sitting out by itself without people around they’re going to feel less rushed. You could get creative and hook your kill switch system to the fuel pump so it’ll crank but not start. Get even more creative and use a timer and turn signal flasher attached to the horn so it beep beep beeps if they get it to crank. Oops, really all unnecessary if you have a chip key.

No arguments here. But also not going to give away all my security measures on a public forum.
