i was just watching Scotty Kilmore on YouTube, he was saying Optima batteries where junk. It got me thinking about Kirkland Costco batteries. Has anyone had any experiences with Kirkland Costco batteries? My OEM probably will need to be changed by the end of the year.

Never had an optima fail on me. But they are by no means cheap. If you don't have a need for the load then definitely look at more valued options. Costcos Kirkland brand is pretty well establish as being as good as the leading competitor. Sometimes they're even just the good stuff with a sticker slapped on it. And if you're not happy or it craps out its Costco so you'll be taken care of.

Costco battery warranty is awesome. You don't need to have it tested. Just bring it in and for another. The only issue is you'll need to remove it in the parking lot or have another car to bring it.

Optimas reputation from what I read have gone down. I use a Odyssey AGM group 31 but it's much more costly. It just depends on your goals.

IMO the majority of batteries nowadays are the same with just different labels. As long as you avoid cheap brands, you’ll be fine. Batteries are a consumable item, so depending on your location, they’ll all last roughly the same amount of time.

Costco stuff is pretty well vetted before it gets into the store. If I understand correctly, most batteries are made by a handful of manufacturers and sold under multiple labels.

I had 2 yellow top optima's bite the bullet on me in my last car. Had a total of 1000 watts for the stereo and I foolishly never upgraded the alternator so take that into the consideration.

Honestly if you're close to stock (ie not overlanding etc) the Kirkland battery is going to be just fine for you. Costco's warranty program is pretty hard to beat.

I just replaced a couple batteries via Costco. They sell Interstate at my local Costco and are at substantial discount compared to the auto parts stores.

My commute is really short under 15-20KM a day. I'm wondering if that is killing my longevity of my battery as it isn't getting a good enough charge.

The Kirkland batteries are now made bu interstate and also says so on the batteries. They are good if all you need is a standard replacement battery. Otherwise, there are better batteries at a high price. I went with an AGM, just because i run a dashcam in parking mode and it would run the battery down to a point where at times was too weak to start the truck. I dont have that problem anymore with the AGM.

    LS1 swap with nitros.
I have Costco interstate batteries in my S2000, TSX, and Taco. They are inexpensive and have a 3 year warranty. Same batter for our TSX is $85 at Costco and $267 at Northstar. Both have same warranty. Easy choice.

I agree with Scotty, I had a yellowtop Optimas in my tractor >2007 and they failed way early.

my 16 is over 3 1/2 years old so i decided to get a new battery. took the old one out in costco parking lot put it in a basket, wheeled it in to the battery dept. exchanged for costco battery then installed the new battery in the parking lot. easy peezy, saved me bring back the old one for core refund. if you do this suggest you clean the battery terminals at home first, that's what i did. soak the cable ends in baking soda and water, had to do three or four times to get all the corrosion off. oh yea, make sure you have 10mm wrench to remove the battery

I work with batteries as part of my career. Anyone who thinks an AGM, Gel-type or other high-tech non-spillable battery will outlast or outperform a properly constructed, good quality, flooded-lead acid battery is just wrong. The only advantage to these ghee-whiz colourful batteries is they are non-spillable. Everything else, including lifespan, is a compromise at best.

Agree, I promote batteries based on warranty and availability, the king is Interstate (for me in canada), which in turn I have found to be reliable.

Even the best batteries can fail, and hot climate areas can ruin a fancy battery quickly. I'd rather have an affordable one that I can warranty easy and quickly if it does fail early.

Where I am around 5 years is time to plan on replacement.

    Cool stuff
AGM technology is by far the best choice if price isn’t a problem.

The batteries at the Costco in my area (USA) are Interstate branded.
